By your standard, you could put a 100watt UV in the ocean. Would it help to kill or eradicate dinos?
Leave it there for 500 years. Will it have made a difference?

Same principle applies to our reef tanks.

I get it. Thank you. I still think we are arguing percentages. With your example, 100w UV vs the ocean. No that wouldn’t help. But that’s not the sizes and numbers we are discussing. Appreciate the responses!!

For me and my situation, pulling water from the sump and returning to the sump won't work. I have a large commercial grade UV and I simply can't get enough total water through it if I have it plumbed in the sump. Not enough water will reach the light to make a difference with dinos because the dinos reproduce faster than the UV can deal with them given the severely reduced water feed from the sump vs the didplay.

I hope I'm explaining is well enough.
The dinos outpace the UV when plumbed into the sump. Therefore it won't help.

It won't work because of the rate of reproduction of dinos.
You will not get enough water through the UV if plumbed only in the sump. You can't process enough water to make a difference.

Not sure I agree. Flow through the sump also matters. If you're flowing 1000gph through your UV and 3000 through your sump it will work just fine. If flow through your UV exceeds the flow through your sump then your statement is probably accurate.

Yup. I see the reverse issue, UV sterilizer that need a very particular flow rate (usually slower side) and for me, my return pumps, are to high to pass through UV. It’s all in the numbers.

It would work if I had a dinos issue in my sump. My dinos issue was in my display.

Good luck to you all.

I reduced the 1.5” on the 40 watt unit to 0.5” fine. You have to stand it vertical so all the air is pushed out from the bottom up.

I found these velcro straps at Menards and screwed them unto the wall. Works great.

Are you going after ich? If you are going for algae and bacteria, you are going to want 1inch pipe or better. 0.5 inch will not allow enough water flow.

1:37. It is possible to go from sump to sump. No details on how to achieve, but acknowledgment it is possible. Just to point out there are no obsoletes in many things in this hobby.

Have fun trying to find the magical math that allows it to work. I'm sure it's not impossible.

In the meantime, I'm going to do what is proven through testing and my own experience to work.

Even tho in March 21' you weren't sure if you had dinos or not, I read your "method"....... don't be so harsh on others

Following up on this

I have a Smart UV 40watt but I am trying to install this in my sump on the top of the inside of my stand.

I am going to go 1 inch PVC and to tie I to my manifold. Also - wanted to get the 2 mounting brackets on BRS but not sure how sturdy this will hold the UV with water.

Anyone have any experience with the mounting brackets using them to mount horizontal.
