I have an RFS-39 sump from Innovative Marine and I was wondering if there's any possible way to get a Reefmat-500 to work with it. I want to put it in the skimmer chamber with the skimmer, but I have no idea if there's enough space for both. Example tanks I have seen have always had their components in close proximity with one another, so I figure I'd ask.

As for filter socks, if I do end up going this route, how often and how long would I need to do this for? I have read on these forums that some people do not need their mechanical filtration at all. How do people discern if they can go without mechanical filtration or not? Is it something that happens overtime?

I am in the process of finishing up my build, and this filtration is one of the last things I need to get resolved before I can start. I'd be fine with changing filter socks (I'd hope I can get disposable ones) as long as I know I won't be committed to it for a lifetime.

My already obtained filtration pieces are a Tunze 9410 DOC DC skimmer, and I will also be setting up a chaeto refugium. My tank is 100G IM EXT.

Any insight is greatly appreciated :)

Are you able to measure the compartment that it will go in? Also, measure your skimmer and see if they will both fit. I know they give dimensions for the Reefmat 500.
As far as filter socks, some people use them, some people don't. You can change them when they are visibly dirty or when water start flowing "over" them versus through them. The choice to use 'mechanical filtration', which includes fleece rollers, is a personal choice. Some believe it leaves more 'food' in the water column when you don't filter it out, some believe in having ULNS systems so they filter heavily...

I would be putting them both inside the second chamber, so 16.3'' x 11.4''. The skimmer is roughly 7'' x 10'', but it also has a piece on the back which can spin around, which makes me confident I could get both it and the Reefmat in, they'd just be rather close neighbors. I also don't know if their positioning in the sump matters.
