My Tank Thread
Things that keep me up at night, unless I fall asleep, in no particular order. :) Please, do not take the following as statements of fact. These are statements of worry. :(
Observation is not a valid method of quarantine. How can you tell the difference between a fish in your QT that is ich tolerant (think ich management) and one that is ich free?
TTM is not a valid method of quarantine. There is no reason to think that fish cannot become resistant to velvet just like they do ich. Some strains of velvet may go through their life cycle too quickly for TTM to work. This means you can properly do TTM and still add an infected fish in your DT that shows no symptoms.
It seems like more and more fish suppliers are running low levels of copper in their tanks. Over time, doesn't this almost have to encourage the development of copper resistant strains of ich and velvet? Could we get to the day where treating pro-actively with copper will also not be a valid method of quarantine?
I figure that if I am going to lose sleep over every little white spec of sand I see stuck to one of my fish I am going to do my best to make sure everyone else shares my panic. Except Paul B, who adds extract of supermodel into his tank to ensure it stays healthy. :p
