I have been using Brightwell Alk 8.3 over the past year and recently switched to RedSeas Alk. I shake the bottle pretty good and when I pour the liquid into the cup it appears clear. But once I add directly to the tank it's almost appears flakey or grain like? Is this normal? Will it annoy the corals if it come in contact? Brightwell just produced a white color when hitting the water.

What you are experiencing is a chemical reaction which temporarily creates Magnesium Hydroxide due to the high PH solution of Red Sea’s Alk supplement.

Brightwell likely used Sodium Bicarbonate, which is slightly acidic, while Red Sea is reportedly basing theirs on Sodium Carbonate, a basic chemical.

You should dose it in a high flow area such as near your return pump, if you don’t have a sump than try to find a high flow area in your display where it wouldn’t hit your corals directly.

I added some near my pump and it didn't happen. Thank you!
