How are the new G3? I was planning on buying a red sea aquarium but I met someone at my local aquarium store and he said to get a waterbox because red sea leak. I did some research and found the G2 over 90 gallons do leak. They say the G3 has fixed these issues. Whats everyones opinion on the red sea G3 and waterbox aquariums?

Unfortunately you won't find much info here, their popularity on R2R seems to have dropped off drastically since the G1 and G2 issues and if you try their Facebook page you wont find anything since they delete any post mentioning a leak and ban you.

You are basically ok with any other brand out there... I love the Innovative Marine tanks but people seem to be happy with Eshopps as well. UN is very nice but they come with a heavier price tag.

Ultimate option is custom with Glass Cages but that's also going to cost a bit more but you get the quality that comes with that.

I would recommend Waterbox but it seems they have been having a lot of shipping delays/logistic issues as of late.

G2 was supposed to be the fix of g1. That didn't work out. Now g3 is the new "fixed" model.
It would be like if Daewoo came out with a new model that "fixed" all the problems of past models... who would be willing to try it out? Fools and the ignorant, I assume.

I read about the Red Sea Leaks reported on the G1/G2 versions. After doing some research on the changes to the G3 versions: marine-quality plywood cabinets, extra cabinet frame bracing, eurobracing around the top, different leveling feet, a support lip added for the front glass, etc. I decided to purchase a Red See Reefer 625 G3 Max. Some of the changes I've listed only apply to their larger boxes, 425 and larger.

I also tried to find reliable statistics on leaks/failures by units sold for a number of major retailers without much luck. I did find it interesting that there were reports that WB had a habit of removing any negative reports, while Red Sea kept negative reports but turned off comments. Not that I'd trust any manufacturer to be completely upfront with their failure rates and warranty approvals.

One thing I found interesting is that, regardless of manufacturer, most leaks seem to occur at the 3-4-year mark or later.

Since I couldn't find any definitive data, I looked at the options, the changes Red Sea had made, and decided to go with one of the new G3 Red Sea tanks. The best data I could find were the relative market shares, where Red Sea seems to dominate, and WB didn't even show up. But, since none of them actually publish sales, failures, or pretty much any data publicly, I was left with just making a judgment call.

Bottom line is you need to be comfortable with whatever choice you make. Now, if you want to wait 3 or 4 years, I'll report back on my experience 😜

You could also go semi custom. Joe (@Joe Glass Cages ) provided a pretty healthy list that you could contact each with a specific tank size for quotes. One does not always have to go with shrink wrap. I think he listed about 40 manufactures and didn't even list his as number one. That is cool on its own.

Shrink wrap has plumbing, pumps, some have lights - basically everything you need. In this case some may be able to provide you with this but you may be required to do some heavy lifting on your own. It is not that difficult and bring you a bit more involved for lack of a better word. Some offer stands be it steel, aluminum, or wood. T slot pre fab also.

If that is not your thing, which I totally understand, then look at BRS or similar web portals and see what they list/sale. Waterbox, innovative marine, etc. Various sizes.

Finally - with regards to Red Sea. Lots of posts but one thing to consider is that we often times do not hear what the root cause was. Is it Red Sea, is it hobbyist installation, etc. Not making any excuses but we don't know so it makes talking about this somewhat interesting because we also don't know the installation base vs failures to put any sort of failure percentage to it. Point is, if you like their kits reach out to them and see if it makes sense. G3's, as someone noted above, are only recently out like late 2025 so not a lot of time in the installation base. On paper it sounds good /shrug.

Let’s just say that there’s no way I’d have one of these in my house if they haven’t changed their silicone formula for G3…
This is where the true issue lies but they don't mention they've made this fix for the G3.

Innovative Marine is running a sale right now. I am happy with my two tanks from them, but they are smaller. Waterbox has a good rep. My plan for my next tank is going Eurobrace. I am planning a 240 or 270.

Admitting to a change in silicone would be as good as admitting fault for the countless millions of dollars in property damage their aquariums have caused… (much less the astronomical loss of animal life [people’s pets…])

So, it’s very unlikely they’ll do more than quietly switch it out…

True, I just won't be the one taking the risk... even yet, let's say they did quietly change it out, I still can't trust the brand.

When I got my first tank 3 years ago the RedSea G2 models Just came out and we’re supposed to have addressed the seam bust issues associated with the G1. 2.5 years later my front left and back right seams started to fail on my RedSea 525 G2. RedSea was great and replaced the tank under warranty. I now have a new 525 G3 tank (only the display aquarium portion was replaced). Beautiful tank. Only time will tell if the tanks stands the test of time . . .

Ended up pulling the trigger on a CG 96x30x25. I’m hard pressed do time. But might do a build thread since I don’t have proper one with the full details posted. This past evening just finished the drains and returns…. It was a long evening for me haha. Tomorrow im adding more fresh water and testing the drains. Finished the electrical outlet system I added above the tank, I will start the cycling tomorrow. Have a bunch of fish waiting to get into the new tank!
