I'm not a Red Sea hater at all - and was open to G2s because I figured the flaw was fixed and had not personally been affected by their G1 failures like many others have

But after seeing many reports of G2s fail, and now suspiciously Red Sea is already pushing and selling G3s - I would stay far away from their tanks.

I like their dosers, their reefmat, their gyres, their ATO and their app - but I wouldn't touch a Red Sea tank with a 10 foot pole under any circumstances at this point.

If nothing else because of their horrible customer service around it and other things.

There's a lot of big brand haters in any hobby or industry - and over exaggerated claims of failures and defects (PC building for example)

This isn't that - this is a real issue.

Previous owner of a RS Reefer170, which was also failing in the silicone. Didn’t waste any time getting everything out and dumping it. I wouldn’t take a pico from RedSea. The first tank was a bow front from a LFS, disaster when the bottom cracked. I purchased a Cade and it’s very well built, tank, stand, sump and plumbing. Glass Cages also very well built, prior owner.

Alright folks. Still conducting lots of research before jumping into reefing. Went to the LFS yesterday and had a good conversation about Red Seas, leaking issues, and the new Euro bracing on the G3 systems. Then today I saw a potential "deal" on an unopened Red Sea 625 G2+ that another store is selling because the client who ordered it no longer wants it - $3k. Therefore, warranty will likely still stand as it is unopened and on the pallet (so I'm told). However....I note the fear of Red Seas in the forums and have watched many leak videos and posts......which leads us to the poll:
It is flat not worth the risk. Go with another vendor please.

This is an important thread. I encourage everyone to share it and participate in the voting.

This hobby deserves better. When standards rise, the entire industry benefits. Excitement returns. Trust returns. Growth returns. We cannot allow poor practices to become normal, especially in a niche industry like ours. There is simply not enough room for behavior that damages long-term confidence.

It’s time to hold brands accountable and raise the bar for everyone, including ourselves.

Greatly greatly appreciate everyone’s input. I spoke with an LFS this past weekend who had a G3 in shop and he pointed out the Euro bracing. I mentioned the silicone being the point of failure, and he admitted he knows of no change there.

Spoke with another LFS who won’t sell Red Sea anymore. Comes down to a company selling G1s for 10ish years the G2s come out and all of a sudden there’s a G3 right behind it…not a good indicator. They sell Pro Clears and Glass Cages and custom surround Aqueon/Marinelands that are outer braced. Going to talk to them more this weekend along with another LFS who uses Pro Clears as their larger fish display tanks.

I’m not going with Red Sea, but as others have said, I encourage the discussion to continue. Carry on!

All 4 of those are great options and you couldn't go wrong, especially Glass Cages. Great choice.

I took a snapshot of the poll results and tried to send it to Red Sea.

I thought they might like to see how people are feeling about their company.

I was unsuccessful because I didn't have a serial number.

Because it’s not just the cost of silicone. It’s the fact that one takes 7 days and one takes 30 days to cure. They have to sit on tanks for a much longer time before moving them
ASI list 7 days for their Silicone to reach full cure so why do think it takes 30 days? Also, I never have been able to find 2K Silicone for Aquarium use. I'd be curious to see the MDS sheet on it.

I can’t understand the hold that RS tanks still have on people, especially those buying them fully aware of the risk. They are knowingly cutting corners to save money and I feel that this is nothing but negligence on their part. Why support a company that refuses to take steps to make their tanks more reliable? There are so many other options. I just don’t get it.
Many people are, no doubt, like me. I'd bought my Reefer 535 before I joined this forum and learned of the problems.

Going off what the most reputable tank builders have said.

This German forum also has great information about silicone and curing times:

A 1K acetic-curing silicone needs 1 day per 1mm to cure. It is not a set 7 day period. So these tanks with 19-20mm glass thickness will need 3 weeks at a minimum to cure properly. A 2K silicone is just a couple days at most.

They also talk about how 2k silicones shrink and detach from the glass as they cure/age

Morning...I am brand new to the forums, have been reading all over the place, and am getting ready to jump into the hobby with both feet. Tonight I was literally seconds from purchasing the RedSea Max Nano G2 XXL, but for some reason I stopped. Tonight, after work, I have been reading all of these horror stories...As a new guy here, still looking for a setup, the #1 reason why RS was my first option was the ease of getting a complete setup, including lights, skimmer, literally everything. Tonight, while reading, I looked up the SR 60 and SR 80 from IM, I believe. They are beautiful, but I have literally no clue what to buy to fit in the back of them to get a setup similar to what RS is offering with the complete build. For a new guy, that is literally the only thing that steered me to RS. The true all-in-one, I guess. I will say, you guys have scared me enough that I am not buying anything yet. I will research more on what to buy that can fit in the back of those IM systems. They look very nice. Thank you for listening to a new guy's perspective. I bought tickets for Aquashella in Dallas next month, and I am looking forward to that weekend for sure.

I don't think there were many issues with the smaller Red Sea tanks. The Nano/170 and even the 250 weren't reporting like the 300 and up. I have had a G1 170 for over 6 years and it's just fine. Understand if you want to stay away from the brand as they were slow to address issues but the smaller sizes should have normal risk of any rimless.
