Greetings! Poly Fleece based filter mats and socks leach/ release microplastics and fibers into our reef systems along with the various carbon chains from the polymer breakdown.

We are launching a new patent-pending compostable product to remove plastics from the filtration equation in reef tanks and would love to get in-situ feedback from ardent users of roller mat filters for the initial product prototype. (Bonus; less landfill or at least compostable vs. hundreds of years of pollution back into the environment and our water.)

To be considered, please indicate the type of roller filter you are using today and your contact information. We will send-out another survey and an invitation to a reporting/ monitoring tracker to collect the feedback from participants. This is a two to four week study/ collection of feedback on use and effects. (We have tested a prototype in a 1000 L fully stocked reef system with excellent results.)

I'm not much at tracking things but suggest you may want to add a reefmat 500 to the poll. I may be wrong but I think there are more 500s in use than the nano since the nano was just recently released.

EDIT : I run a 500 on one tank.

I run a Reef Factory Medium sized roller system the roll is 8" wide on a 1 & 1/8" core.
Thanks, TL1! I am adding you to the list. Once we have some more consensus I shall share a link to gather detail.

Best regards,

Will

Running a Red Sea 1200 roller mat on a 210 gallon plus 48 sump. Would like to test. Don’t know how to send pm here.

Hello! This is great. We are nearing a prototype in the coming week or so. May I have your email? I shall be seeing a survey about your system and then we will share invites to update an online form with findings and any daily/ weekly test parameters.

Best regards,

Will

Hi I am currently using a Hmahli fleece roller. My tank is 60 gallon cube with a hmahli sump. I I recently found out that the fleece rolls for my filter have been discontinued. I had to buy another one and rewound it to the old core. I checked parameters every other day using the Neptune trident. Would like to test.

I am running a Fiji cube ARF for a few months now. Roll is 6 inches wide and 82Ft long.
It's the only roller fleece that fits into the filter sock space of the Innovative Marine RFS-39 sumps. Wish the roll is wider ie 8 to 10 inches

We just received the first shippable batch and are ready to sent the test rolls. They are currently available in a size fit to the ReefMat 1200 and more sizes coming Jan/ Feb 2025. The filter roll is much longer than the available Filter Mat from RedSea yet lasts 1:1 due to slightly finer filtration.

Current Gaia Fleece 17tm dimensions: 17cm W x 12 cm Dia x 4 CM (1.6ish inch) inner core. If your roller filter can receive this it will work!

When you say slightly finer, what is the actual microns. Red Sea is 200µ for their fleece. I run an AquaMaxx 170 filter roller but use the Red Sea 250 rolls on 3 of my tanks. Before the 250 came out, I used to cut down the 500 rolls to fit. I would not be adverse to try your product, I can cut it down to size, but if the microns are too small that would be a "No Go" for me.

This materials offers 200 micron equivalent when dry. While it is an organic material sourced from plants (not rayon or viscose) there is some expansion in fibers to reduce the micron size pending time in water approximately 50 microns in initial testing. The roll is nearly 55 meters and after several months of using the RedSea Reef mat in the same conditions this matches the duration of the Red Sea Reef mat product 1:1.

For example, in my own 1000 L system a typical 35 M roller mat lasts about 15 days +/-. The Gaia Fleece Product lasts also 15 +/-. Activities including siphon cleaning and stirring-up debris can affect the duration as with any filtration product, of course. The point in sending out a free sample is simple to learn more about how the product performs and any qualitative feedback in general.

We want something for those who believe in a world with less plastic and related child compounds introduced into the water and this is our first prototype.

I agree, wholeheartedly. I am responding because I would like to see less microplastics in the environment. Another consideration is the length of your fleece especially if it swells. The max length I can do is a bit more than 100ft. You current configuration would jam up my rollermat half way thru its life. While some systems may handle the length, the extra strain on the motor may shorten its life.

Luckily, the net swelling is negligible apart from the actual pores slightly increasing the filtration level by reduction in pore size. In the end of the day, after the rolls have processed through the RedSea roller filters, the diameter is virtually identical to the roll at beginning.

If there is an actual roll size you are interested in, please feel free to share the specs and we can see what is possible.

These specs would be great.
