Discounted clown I picked up from Petco yesterday, wondering if we're clownin' around or if we're experiencing a swim bladder issue.

Eating fine, in a quarantine tank solo, dosed with Rally Pro yesterday and today, never rests on bottom, breathing and outer scales look normal.

Obviously the parameters are fine, again, quarantine tank, she's been here for 24 hours, was swimming like this at the store, hence the discount.

No powerheads in here blowing her around, just a HOB filter, it's turned down, not a flow issue.

No problem seeing videos and the clown appears to be good and I suspect may be too much current/flow which its trying to resist. Cut the percentage slightly and see i there is a change in swim behavior

Only flow is a HOB filter but it's set to the lowest currently, no power head in the quarantine.

It wasn’t swimming like that at the store? If it was, then this is likely a genetic defect known as “belly sliding”. Breeders should cull those, but some don’t because it cuts into their profits if they don’t sell every fish.

If this developed only since you brought the fish home, it could be a water current issue.

Hi there,

She was swimming like this at the store, they gave me a discount on her, but since it was a box chain pet store, they didn't know if it was an ailment, a genetic disorder, or if maybe it's normal. She's also quite small, about 1", so I suspect she is on the younger side.

She is in a quarantine tank, so parameters are excellent, I didn't spend much on her so was willing to take a gamble. No fish or corals in here with her.

It’s probably developmental; genetic or some inability for the swim bladder to inflate around the flexion stage.

Something she can live with in your expert opinion? She will forever be a solo tank inhabitant.

It will live if genetic but swim this way going forward

Yes - kept with no other fish to compete for good or attack it, it should do fine. Sometimes,?these fish are “runts”, but I don’t know if that’s just because they have their food stolen by other fish, or if there is a developmental reason.
