I've been lurking on this site since 2013 and have been keeping reef tanks for about 18 years now and have tried it all, except a large tank. Up until this upgrade my current tank is the largest I've had being a Waterbox 80.4 Frag which is a 48x24x12 65g display. I've almost always stuck with softies and LPS with a few SPS here and there but with my most recent move I decided to jump into Acros and currently have 44 different frags. I quickly realized my 12" deep tank will no longer work and am picking up my new (to me) tank this Friday.

New Aquarium is being purchased used from a local reefer and is as follows:

Aquarium - SCA 180 gallons (48 x 36 x 24) with top and bottom eurobrace and Exotic Marine Systems 32" Overflow with 1.5" drains.
Stand - Framing Tech 80/20
Sump - IceCap RS-36XL Reef Sump
Return Pump - Octo Varios8
Powerheads - 3x EcoTech Marine MP40WQD, 2x Tunze, 2x IceCap Gyre 4k
Lighting - ATI 48" Powermodule Hybrid 8x54w T5 & 3x75w LED (coming from my current tank) supplemented with 2x 47" Quantum Helix Meso Blue bars (just ordered)
Skimmer - Vertex Omega 180
Other Equiptment - KH Guardian, full Apex system w/ DOS for AFR, 25w UV (will upgrade), Ranco Temp Controller

Stand is currently poorly skinned with PVC, I will clean it up and wrap it in 3M Architectural Vinyl to match out house design (wifes requirement for the upgrade). Still debating how I want to mount the panels, either french cleats or magnets or a combination of the two. The canopy will also be re-skinned but is currently an 80/20 frame mounted to a motorized desk lift (250lb capacity) to move it up and down. Biggest challenge for me will be wiring up the new setup as my current one is a mess. I will build a controller board and do it properly with the help from my dad as he was an electrician for 30+ years.

I will do the transfer over the course of a week if everything goes to plan, all new sand, all my current rock, and I have about 60lbs of additional rock that has been cooking in the dark for about two months that was seeded with my sump rock.

I've been battling aiptasia for about a year now and as of this week it is FINALLY almost gone. I tried peppermint shrimp first with no luck, got rid of them and then added 10 LARGE berghia which after 3-4 months I gave up on after zero improvements and never seeing them, then added a Klein Butterfly which completely ignored them and immediately started nipping at my new SPS frags (none of my established SPS which was odd), then added a Aiptasia Filefish which again I never saw him pick at them over several weeks, then last week added 9 peppermint shrimp from AlgaeBarn. Im not sure who is doing the work, maybe a combination of all of them but I can barely spot an aiptasia now after having well over 100. The Klein has also stopped nipping at my SPS entirely and has been a great fish for the past few weeks.

Current stock list:
Fish - 3x Dispar Anthais, Klein Butterfly, Aiptasia FileFish, Allards Clownfish, 2x Springeri Damsels, Firefish,
Coral -

I've also got a Nanocube 14 in my office with all of my old softies and gorgonians and a clown pair and Biota Radial Filefish I will be taking down - I'll put some of it in the new tank but mostly will be sold off.

The new tank before I pick it up:

I've moved 12 times in the last 17 years so I've always kept them small and theres a few gaps with no tanks, but we just settled in a house we think we will be at for awhile now and we just had a baby so time for a bigger tank!

Current Waterbox Frag 80.4 (48x24x12) and office Nanocube 14 w/ StevesLEDs

Picking up the tank Saturday!

Wired my ranco temp controller and shrink wrapped the temp probe.

1000019414.jpg

1000019415.jpg

Also painted the marine plywood base with marine paint. I'll be putting the wood base on rubber pads on my tile floor (uneven terracotta tile) to spread the weight and protect the floor. Stand will go on the wood and be much easier to level.

Tank tomorrow!

Have a out 100 gallons of salt water mixed and 60-70lbs of extra rock either in my sink or dark aging in buckets for several months with live rock.

Always a big believer in rinsing sand so of course following @brandon429 (can't tag him? Says not a member?) rinse routine. I used live sand though as it rinses SOOOO much faster and that few extra bucks is worth the headache of dry sand rinsing. Also used a strainer and shower hose head (high pressure) and I was able to rinse 80lbs of sand in under an hour.

Picked up the tank yesterday down on Miami (I'm two hours north in Jupiter). Cleaned everything yesterday, got the stand and canopy setup today. Tomorrow I'll have some friends over to help me move the tank.

1000019721.jpg
1000019723.jpg

The canopy is a standing desk rig mounted to the frame so it can go up and down.

To protect my fragile spanish terracotta tile floor I used a 3/4" marine plywood base painted with marine paint. To allow airflow under that I used 10 5"x5' steel reinforced rubber pads. My floor also reacts with rubber so I put small felt pads on the bottom of those pads. This should disperse the weight enough over those 10 pads to protect the tile. Also allowed me to level the stand much easier as the tile is so uneven. Total stand height is 40" with the base.

Was able to move the tank in today with just two of us. Had 4 suction cups and a hydraulic lift so it wasn't too bad. Hardest part was being 36" wide it wouldn't fit thru any of my doors so we had to have it sideways. The tank is only 1/2" glass though so not too bad, I think around 350lbs.

Kind of intimidating now!

Side note, I woke up to two of my SPS frags RTN.
The RC Poison Envy was a total loss and my WWC Suicide Squad I fragged half of it. Tested all parameters below and did a 20% water change and turned my lights down to 50%. Hoping I don't wake up tomorrow to more.

10/14 10:50am
- 78.8
- pH - 7.97
- Alk - 8.1
- Ca - 440
- Mg - 1400
- PO4 - 0.08
- NO3 - 5

After adding about 80g to the main tank I noticed the weight was still on the corners and not spread across the base like I hoped. Went back and forth with framing tech and added 3 legs with the center one having a massive 4" foot to really spread the weight.

Tank is about halfway full now, maybe another 80-100g and I'll be able to transfer. Leaving for a short trip Sunday but hoping to transfer everything over Tuesday!

Also just bought a Octo Varios8 to run it.

Finally got the tank filled, salinity and temp matched, and all my extra rock that was in my sump and buckets cooking for months in. That was 70-80lbs of rock I thought would be enough (plus will add my old display rock with encrusting SPS soon) but it looks like nothing! Got the reefmat and skimmer running too.

Put up two Quanta Helix Meso Blue bars up for now until I transfer my ATI over. Also threw in a test SPS frags to see how it does. Should be good as parameters are same and all the old rock is in there theoretically.

If the frag does ok ill retest everything and transfer another 80lbs with all my SPS and fish this weekend!

Added two more SPS frags and transferred my office Nanocube14 full of softies and gorgonians to the tank. Also the pair of clowns, radial file fish, sexy shrimp, and anemones that were in that tank.

Going out of town tomorrow or else if transfer my SPS tank so I'll wait until I get back next week.

Transferred everything today! When I was out of town something happened with my auto feeder on my current tank and it dumped the entire supply in the tank, checked parameters yesterday and NO3 was 20 and PO4 was reading 0.9+ on my Hannah ULR! I keep a high nutrient system but PO4 typically sits around 0.2 (+ some with the big fish temporarily in there) so I was worried and made the move. Slightly concerned with the move from the high nutrient to low nutrient new tank but PO4 should be in the rocks too so I'll check tomorrow and adjust slowly from here on out. Temp, salinity, and alk were the same so hoping for a happy outcome.

Quick pick after the transfer, ill clean it up, get the ATI hung and take better pics soon. Super happy with how it looks in person, hard to aquascape when all the rocks have sps encrusted in place. All the fish are happy.

Also mounted the Quanta Helix bars this evening. My dad's coming by Saturday to help me move the apex, KHG, DOS, and electronics over and build a control board. Need to build my screen too too.

Three days in and everythings looking good! Spent the last two days building a control board. The dang ATI ballast takes up so much space.

Need to adjust the lighting mounts still but almost there.

Slight mess up on my end last night. Late night I setup up my DOS and turned it ON instead of AUTO and before I caught it, it dosed 400mL of AFR. Luckily my normal dose is 90mL so less than 5x the amount. Checked calcium this morning and it's only 450. According to the AFR calculator it should increase my cal 20 (already tested) and Alk around 2.8 so not toooo bad plus my new rocks are helping use up the Alk with the mini cycle so hoping it doesn't spike too much. My biggest worry is that this is just a few days after tank transfer so parameters were already fluctuating so just more inbalance for the SPS to withstand.

As it stands everything looks great and good polyp extension.
