Well I think we are all finally seeing the heat of summer, well most of us here in the US that is! Already hit 95 degrees here although today is a bit cooler. With that high heat comes fighting the temperature of your tank and trying to keep it at an acceptable level. But what is an acceptable level? Let's talk about it today!

1. What is your target summer time temperature for your reef tank?

2. What temperature do you think it too high and when do you start to worry?

tank resides in the basement. unless we hit 90+ outside temps for a week (we don't have ac) or more it pretty much stays at 77

2. 83+ I would begin to worry, based on my tank I had in the mid eighties.

My tank is set to stay between 78.5 and 79. Anything slightly above or below that doesn't worry me. If my tank got up to 80 I would be concerned, but only because my equipment should have shut it off before then.

Just considering the temp of the tank and not equipment failure I wouldn't be concerned until somewhere above 83.

1. What is your target summer time temperature for your reef tank?

I always aimed for 79 but since chiller unit- it’s been 76-78 and corals and fish have looked their best

2. What temperature do you think it too high and when do you start to worry?

t 82 or above, I start to notice “sluggishness “ and my apex shuts lights down at 83.4. Orphek Atlantiks can Put out heat as does the reeflo hammerhead pump

Part of this hobby is the "means" to absorb auxiliary costs.... increased electric bill, increased water bill.

The room where my tank sits has AC supplied to where the house temp doesn't get hotter than 74°

With AC in the Summer and furnace heat in the Winter.... my tank sustains 78° year round.

If you walk up to your thermostat trying to make your electric bill $150 rather than $300.... I question your "means" to be in this hobby.

I knew going in, my tank would cost me an extra $100-$150 a month in auxiliary expenses

Thankfully it hadn’t been something I’ve had to worry about because the room my set up is in stays cool year round.

Despite the temp spike, I’ve been told raising it to about 82’ can actually help distressed fish combat ick. Is that true (much info from my LFS has been sketchy, so I thought I’d ask)?

Target temp for my tank is 78, year round. I have a chiller, a backup chiller and another backup chiller. lol

81 would make me restless. Acropora dominant tank.

I run my tank between 78-78.5. Religiously. We are currently adding a second story to our house (yeah!) but it’s running right next to the tank. Our house temps have been wonky since they broke through the floor. They will be done tomorrow (or so they say) and I can go back to being insane about tank parameters.

Even though I have two Clip on fans and my tank gets up to 80.3 during the day and it’s killing me.

I prefer my tank temps to follow the seasons (higher in Summer, lower in Winter) with a good couple degree swing each day. Avg of 81 in Aug, 78 in Feb and I've had some 82-83 spikes on hot days (really need to beef up my AC). I've read that corals that see a temp swing and are exposed to higher temps for short periods are more resilient when high temps for extended time occur. Plus I don't like over cycling my heater relays to hit a tight control band.

Never lost a coral to high temps yet but that's mostly because I keep losing them to dinos and algae and critters knocking them over. :)
