Creating and Stocking the Lab​

I began work on the culture lab in the summer of 2005. The lab is located directly on the beach on the southwest shore of Lower Matecumbe Key in the Florida Keys. The house is about 200 feet up on the sandy beach. There was a great deal of basic preparation on the room, a 16 by 25 foot ground level concrete room (floor, walls and ceiling) with one window, an outside door on the north side of the room and a door on the south side that opened into a small bathroom that in turn opened to the south side of the building. The room had to be cleaned, some concrete repaired, plumbing for the swimming pool on the floor above removed, and the floor walls, and ceiling painted. I did this while dancing around the near miss of four hurricanes in the late summer and early fall.
