The fish room is a 8' x 8' room. I have a dedicated utility sink in the room and there is a floor drain. A spectra pure mega maxcap RODI system is plumbed into the line supplying the sink. I also had a vent fan tied into the room that is connected to a humdity sensor. The walls are water resistant green board. Guess if there is much splashing I could add plastic wall paneling.

I had the trim carpenters build a two stack 4' x 2' shelf. Original thought was to put a QT on the lower shelf but that has been upgraded to a separate frag system. The top shelf and directly under the rafters is being dedicated to storage and a 60 gallon cube refugium.

There will be a dedicated water storage and mixing station. Made up of two 105 gallon Norwesco containers. The external mixing and drive pump is a Blue line 70HD. We were going to use cement blocks for the base but they took up too much room so instead a custom stand was built for the two water storage tanks.

The sump is a 150 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank. With a brute container on one end that will act as a large ;) filter floss chamber as well as cut back on the return splashing into the stock tank. The tank is plumbed with two Reef Savvy ghost overflows. So a total of 4 drain lines and 2 emergency drains. The 4 drain lines run into a central drain that runs into the brute container. The emergency drains drain directly into the stock tank and are higher than the water line. That way if there is a problem I should be able to see and hear it, besides just a notification. We ran flex just to the two returns to make to quieter and space was limited.

The return pump powering everything is an external Dolphin Amp Master 6250.

I should say most of the plumbing is schedule 40 with some flex. I'm not a big fan of flex but it has its place in tight spaces.

So that is where the tank is currently at. I'd take some additional pictures but it's a pretty big mess. We are currently working on plumbing the water mixing station to the tank. So that water changes could be automatic or done by valves. Haven't decided which way to go.

So one of the questions that I've been tackling is should I go bare bottom or have a sand bed? Originally I was going to go with a sand bed as I was going to reuse my mp40s. So I would have flow but not a ton. Since thinking that way, I picked up (3) new in the box MP60s. So flow is no longer an issue. Which brings back up the distinct possibility of doing a bare bottom.

I've always been more of a mixed reef person and more about fish. However I'd like to have this tank more sps, with tangs, wrasses and anthias.

What are your thoughts? I'll say at this point I'm 90% bare bottom. I understand that the cycle will probably be around 4 months (WWC Method).

So another week has gone by and we completed the water storage and mixing station. Also started making RO water

We also worked on the sump. Worked more on creating a mechanical filter out of the brute garbage can. Amazing what you can create with a egg crate, plastic pail and brute garbage can. I'll get pictures of the inside at another time.

Hopefully we can get the tank up and running by next weekend.

After thinking things over and discussing with the wife I'm going you skip bare bottom. I have always had a mixed reef and I'm afraid if I got away from a mixed reef I'd regret it.

Hopefully post more pics next weekend.

So I'm a little behind. Since I wrote last we hung the lights. I'm going with (2) Kessil Ap700s mounted in (2) Aquatic Life T5 hybrids. So hopefully I'll be alright for lighting.

We also added sand (Carib Sea Agra-Alive) and dry rock. I at one time thought abouting going bare bottom but decided against it.

We've also started the main tank. So at least started the cycle. I'm hoping we'll have the 60 gallon refugium up and running by this weekend.

I've been dosing MicroBacter7. So now the waiting game has somewhat begun.

Lighting was only on while we were cleaning the inside of the tank and determining the rock placement.

So it has been a little bit since I last posted. I've allowed to the main tank to cycle over a two month period with no lights. I've dosed a couple of different bacteria and my water parameters are spot on. I've attach a view pictures of the frag system we've setup.

So the other update is I've added the tanks first new inhabitants other than a couple of hermit crabs. I'm luck to live by a clownfish breeder so was lucky to be able to cherry pick a pair of extreme frostbite clownfish. The picture does not do them justice. Also the are only under the T5s which I'm only running for two hours a day. Slow ramp. I'm sure I'll have more picture.

I'm pretty stocked tonight as I took my reef down in August of 2018. So it's been over year without a tank.

Just another picture of the first tank inhabitants. These were added directly to the tank without QTing as they are directly from this breeders breed stock. All of the other fish I'm going to add are being QT'd at my LFS. Next in will be a blue eyed kole tang and a small regal tang. But for today it's just the clowns.

So I know I haven't updated this much but since my last update. Beside a heater self destructing in the frag tank and one of my Ap700 malfunctioning the entire system has been operating very smoothly.

Yes, it just so happened that I walked into our home to a smell like burnt popcorn. I immediately raced downstairs and of course the smell was coming from the fish room. It must have just happened as the heat hadn't spiked or dropped, so the Apex wasn't in alarm. I sure did get a shock when I touched the water. So after a couple of complete water changes and running carbon the frag tank was back online. Only to suffer an algea bloom for about a week after I added frags.

The same time this was going on my main tanks lighting decided to act up. Needless to say I did a 180 and removed the (2) AP700s and went with (6) Radion XR 15 Pros. I lucked out and got brand new ones at used prices.

In the mean time we also started the refugium. I purchased one the multi packs from Algea Barn and learned my lesson with sea lettuce. I'm currently waiting till they get chaeto back in stock.

Onto more pleasant things. Currently the entire system is running and running really really well. I added my first frags to the main system on
Tuesday. They had been held in the frag tank in QT for over a month.

In addition, since November I've been adding inhabitants.

Current inhabitants are.
Cleanup Crew - bunch of different snails and hermit crabs
(2) Cleaner Shrimp
Fire Shrimp
(2) Extreme Frost Bite Clowns
Two Spot Tang
Hippo Tang
Mimic Tang
Fowleri Tang
Chevron Tang
Pintail Fairy Wrasse
Labout's Fairy Wrasse
(2) Bi-color blenny
Midas blennies
Blind-Spot Jawfish
(2) M&F Bimaculatus Anthias
Last but not least (definitely not)
Male Crosshatch Trigger

There are a couple more I want to add but this is a good start.

I've attached a couple of pictures. It really is amazing how the dry rock has matured over the months. If my times are correct my first corals, added to the tank this week, we added 6 months after the tank was started. I haven't really had any algea battles (besides the refugium, knock on wood too).

I wanted to share a little more on the Crosshatch. So my friend/LFS that built the tank and that is helping me had purchased the Crosshatch for another client. Needless to say the client decided they didn't want the fish after they had put in their 1,000 gallon tank. So he caught him and brought him over. It is the perfect specimen, its ~12 inches and eat likes a champ. Can almost hand feed him clams. Colors are amazing. He'll be the largest and the main show fish in the tank.

So......its been awhile, actually a long while. Let's just say March was not a good month; besides Covid-19 basically starting. I learned a valuable lesson in that the cross hatch was a gorgeous fish but maybe a tad too big for the other fish. Bottom line is it stressed the other fish and may have brought something in the tank. Needless to say I lost all of my fish except three.

We tore the tank apart and let sit fallow. Then I think I got hit with the ugly stage as well as dinos.

So after months of battling those and our business recovering from earlier closures I finally added a pair of new clowns in October.

About three weeks ago I added back the three fish that had made it along with a magnificent foxface.

A couple of corals, mainly zoas made it through all the algea and dinos, but I lost all my SPS.

I've also slowly been adding corals. QT each group for a month before the go in.

Mainly zoas but I did add a beautiful Colorado Sunburst Anemone. It had plenty of time to find its perfect spot before adding anything else.

I also added a holy grail micromussa and I have a couple of gonipora (amazingballs and burning man).

I have a couple of other SPS beauties on order along with a suprise. I'll see if my photos skills are up to it.

As you can see I'm still challenged at taking photos

So I'm taking it extremely slow this time around. I have a white tail briddletooth tang and juvenile Achilles in QT.

My current stocking is

A pair of clowns
Fowerli Tang
Hippo Tang
Magnificent Foxface
Bimaculatus Anthias

One positive after all of this is I have the most beautiful coraline covered rock.

I'll get a full tank shot soon.

I figured I'd better update or at least share some pictures.

The tank has slowly been maturing and actually it finally about 2 weeks ago my sand bed finally cleared and I'm seeing growth on all my frags.

Fish stocking currently sits at

Hippo Tang
Fowleri Tang
Powder Blue Tang
Mimic or Chocolate Tang
White Tail Briddletooth Tang
Male/female Bimaculatus Anthias
Pair of clowns
Bluesided Wrasse
Pink Streak Wrasse
Lineatus Wrasse
Earlei Wrasse
Midas Blenny

I also have juvenile achilles that is currently on QT. He'll probably be the last Tang I add has he was a pit bull when I added him las time.

I'd like to add a small purple Tang, small black tang and a koi tang (knowing this might take some time to acquire). This last group I hope to qt together before adding.

Other then those no more large fish are planned. A few more anthias, wrasses and a pair of candy basslets are on the list.

Enjoy

I really need to update this more often. The tank is really starting to take off.

Actually I've run out of room (na never) for corals. Need to let them grow now.

As for fish I have the same plus a mystery wrasse.

I've also have a maculiceps in QT. That will eventually be added to the tank along with a juvenile Achilles.

In the mean time enjoy a couple of short videos and pictures. I have two separate rock piles one is dedicated to SPS and the other LPS and euphyllia. I'm not the best photographer so I apologize in advance.
