The mangrove was beautiful, and simple. So simple it probabaly was super challenging to make it look so pretty. Like bonsai trees. lol.
Thanks about the duncan.
I agree it looks simple and the bonsai tree reference was perfect. I would never have time keeping a display of mangroves like that. I wonder if they need to test water often

We are planning a big California trip next summer with the two youngest sons. Youngest will be 15, and middle child will be having his 18th birthday on the trip. We will be visiting Disneyland for sure. We might start in Palm Springs because it is like Mars, and I think the boys would enjoy seeing it. then Planning Disneyland for two days. Then drive up the coast to stay at a beachtown for two 2-3 days to tidepool then up to San Fransisco for 2 days. My husband said San Fran has been over run with homeless folks living in tents on sidewalks and human filth everywhere? So that might impact our plans. Then over to Yosemite for a couple days.

Sounds like an amazing trip and I'm sure you will have a wonderful time. California is a beautiful state. It really is. I don't want to get too much into politics here probably because I would offend many here. However, what you said about San Francisco is also true for Los Angeles and both issues start with the City Council. California is politically inept and with this go around it is only going to get worse.

Certain areas you can still visit in San Fran that would be enjoyable so if you have the time it could be worth it.

South—> north...

San Luis obispo for lunch, see the artist commune area.

Seaside town- Carmel/Monterey. Go to Monterey Bay Aquarium, then San Carlos beach at low tide for rock pools. My old diving beach.

Not that bad in San Francisco (they *hate* people calling it San Fran, lol). There’s some, but I’ve seen way worse in Chicago and NY. Even ATL.

Yosemite is going to need at least three days. 4 if you can get it.

Need a tour guide? Lol.

When we were in San Fransisco several years ago the city was beautiful. Husband was just there 2 weeks ago and he said it was shocking.
We are returning to Cambria. It was so beautiful. There is another beach we are going to hike and have a picnic lunch and watch surfers. Off hand we can not remember the name. It will come to me. I will look into San Carlos beach. Thank you.

I did not take many pictures at MACNA. I was just overwhelmed. It was so awesome. I will be attending more events like this for sure.
Brew aka Steve and I were going thru the display floor to catch the couple things I missed when we saw this mangrove display. It was just so lovely.

Technically mangroves are brackish but will grow better in freshwater because they can redirect the energy they’d normally use to export salt, into growth.

I’ve seen an old trick where you start off the mangrove shoot in a freshwater hydroponic for 2-3 years until it gets 4-5 feet tall, sculpting it as it goes. Then raise the salinity to reef levels over the course of 12-18 months.

California Academy of Sciences did this and had a big batch of mangroves growing in a purpose built greenhouse before they even poured the foundation for the main building. By the time they opened it, they had 12-15 mangroves that were like 16-18 feet tall. They had them surrounding a shallow reef tank inset into the ground like a tide pool, FULL of clams. With s glass walkway going over the middle.

It’s in golden gate park- as much a must see as the Monterey bay aquarium.

Reminds me- I’ve been meaning to set up some shoots for my fishroom. Time to get on it,

Don't skip Monterey Bay Aquarium if you are near San Francisco. The Outer Bay exhibit is just fantastic and one of the largest Acrylic viewing panels on Earth!

This is exactly how the guy with the display discribed it. He also said using fresh water has the added benefit of not needing to spray the leaves regularly to wash the exported salt of them. Much lower maintenance.

Did he also try to say that the mangroves MAKE the water around them more brackish? Did I misunderstand what he was trying to say? I forgot to ask you with everything going on? I hoped I misunderstood what he said.

He did say that. The plants pull salt out of the water until it is washed off the leaves and back into the water.

LOL! I have posted all I have! It was all I took! It was overwhelmimg to me, truly. I was having vertigo and the carpet visuals were making it worse, and my mental processing capacity plummets with vertigo. It is weird. I have a few Star Wars photos?

Not entirely accurate.

White and black mangroves are salt EXCRETORS. They have glands on their leaves that expel salt and they need regular spray with fresh water to wash it off. these guys turn the water brackish as they suck up the salt.

Red Mangroves (better choice in a fishroom, imho) are salt EXCLUDERS. They have a selective membrane in their roots that excludes salt from being taken up in the first place. No need to spray the leaves to clean any salt off. They dont affect salt concentrationin the water, unless its a closed system, in which case, salt concentration in the water increases (marginally) as the plant takes up water but leaves behind the salt. exactly the same as evap increasing salinity

So he did say that? That statement is what made me question everything else he said. By that I mean I would spend time researching before I set something like that up. I believe mangroves only change the water that is taken up into their root systems. There are many different types of mangroves and I know some use different methods to remove excrete or store sodium from water but they only indirectly effect the water around them. Which I suppose is immeasurable compared to the other environmental effects of tide, wind and rain.
I hear stuff like that all the time in this hobby and it drives me a little nuts at times. Sometimes I wonder if people believe the BS they sling around. That guy seemed sincere, though. So who knows.

I sounds mean huh?
