How high of a spike? Need to find out why you're getting the spikes. What other forms of filtration are you using? Are you over feeding?
Good points. I should have asked this as well. I've let you down!

I try and do a 5 gallon water change weekly on my 29G Biocube (actually only about 20G total water volume after sand and rocks). Although, I have done several 10G water changes when the tank gets bad without any harm that I'm aware of.

Check your nitrates & ammonia again. Lighten up on amount your feeding but not the frequency. IMO fish should be fed small portions 2-3x daily. Just know that feeding is an art and takes time to learn how to do it correctly. We all have the tendency to over feed-lol.

Without knowing more about your setup, bio-load, filtration etc, it's hard to advise you on WC frequency.
I change 5g monthly on my 40B/20L sump system. I know my habits and what works for my system. For you I'm sure it is different.

I have been doing a 50% so about 15 gallons every 2 weeks

The tank has live sand and lice rock some softies coral( mushrooms leathers polyps)
I have 2 clown fish 2 yellow clown gobys a lawn mower a diomond goby a star fish and a sea cucumber and a number of snails and crabs
I have an oversized HOB Marineland filter on it and a power head I don't remember the exact filter but it takes 2 rite size c cartridges I want to say it's rated for a 55 gallon tank
All the other parameters seemed fine its just the nitrates where really high

Do 10% water changes weekly, and watch your numbers, if they stay stable then your all set, if the numbers go up, then up the % weekly, this way you keep the water stable and not trying to put out a fire later on when they jump.
