In setting up my new SPS tank flow has been on my mind. I currently have three jebao SOW series pumps, a Nero 5, and an ice cap 200 (mp40 copy) that I have at my disposal although I’m think about trying some gyres for the forward and reverse function. Tank is 48x24x16 so what are you guys using and what do you recommend

I just set up a 48x24x10
Frag tank. I got two dmp40s and a jabeo scp 120. The dmp40 is a bit much for me but with that tank you’re probably good. Now on my main display the dimensions are similar to yours and k have two mp40s. I could probably use a scp on there

one of the jebao I have is the sow-20 I think it’s similar in GPH to a mp40 and then the ice cap 200 is also very similar. Does the jabeo gyre have the reverse function?

Similar tank dimensions with my 60 breeder. I’m just running offset opposing DMP40s at 35% random flow. Anything more and it will blow sand everywhere. Still had to add argonite chunky pieces in certain areas. I think it’s great flow for the future sticks. Plus dual return outlets with random flow outlets.

Honestly I’m. It sure what that is so I’m going to say no. Is that were it pushes than pulls water?

I will say the 16” shallow will be the challenge. A powerful powerhead will have a tendency to create a vortex from the surface down to it and then shoot out bubbles. I had to add some 3d printed guards to my DMP40s to change the flow of them and to avoid the surface cyclone/vortex. This was happening even on the lowest speed, 30%.

I have 2 Red Sea gyres on the sides 2/3’s up and 2 Nero 5’s on the sides along the back of the rockwork on a 5’ 120g. Have you run gyres previously? The reverse function (at least IME) only shifts the angle of the flow ~ 20° down when running in reverse and is about 1/3 of forward force. Great to have the variability for sure but just FYI on mechanics.

No I have never run gyres but I think the AI orbits have full power reverse. Im usually a budget powerhead kind of guy but with the FPR of the orbits I was considering them

With gyres something about the way they produce flow and I could be wrong but I don’t think this is an issue. But yeah with bigger pumps you definitely have to run them further down in the tank to avoid this. @DivingTheWorld has an awesome acro tank with just two mp40s facing forward in the back bottom corners. I was going to do this but I have shelving on the sides of my tank so unless I buy a long pair of tongs to try and place the magnet it’s pretty much not doable, so sides or high up on the back it is

I’ve got an orbit too. You can set reverse speeds variably to 100% but the angle of the veins of the impeller ‘push’ water in reverse which given the housing they sit in only shift angle of flow moderately and with much less force. Still a great thing, just different than what I had expected when initially planning flow.

Gotcha thanks for the input that’s definitely not something they put in the description lol

Power heads will be a challenge in a shallow tank. I’m a halide/T5 user also. Closed loops are the route I go. I’m just now starting to load up a 48x48x18 look down tank. No power heads right now, 2 closed loops with 2 6k gph pumps.

We run a couple of tunze turbelles. One on constant, and the other pulsed thru apex, 5 seconds on, 5 secs off. Aimed at each other to create some randomish flow.

I really like the flow of Gyres type then vortech
The flow is more wide and gentle
I Have a Jebao SCP 120 and I really like it

My old 80 48×24×16 I ran 2 Tunze 6105's and 2 Jebao ow-40's.
On my 150 60×30×21 I run 2 sea sweeps with Tunze 6255 power heads.
On my new 112 36×36×19 I will run 1 sea sweep with a Tunze powerhead.
Sea Sweeps give you great random control with minimal pumps in the tank.
Cord goes through the sweeps.

I would use the gyres on the side towards the top, and the rest on the back wall flowing forward. Then alternate their power with some overlap for a few minutes every hour.
