Why don’t branches branch into other branches in the colony?

Is it a chemical transmitter that does this?

I’m honestly not sure but I think it would be along the lines of it wanting the most light so branching out rather than inwards into more shade so to speak
 
I have a milli with a branch that grew machine and merges at the top with another branch.
