Whats this obsession with Tangs

I think that it is a good thing that we all don't like the same stuff. What one loves another of us don't. Isn’t that the same with everything....cars houses colors food etc ?
I Love my Tangs so you don’t that is totally fine....write about the Fish you love. I think we all can learn from the post’s here not only about Tangs but other fish and corals as well ;)
For me I agree with prior posts .....colors and size and most definitely they’re Charakter ...my naso is my fave she is funny and eats out of my fingers

Over the last 2 years I’ve added tangs that people gave up for free, just to re-home them... they are a 6 year old Sailfin, 5 year old Orange Shoulder Tang, 3 year old Kole Tang. These all have been added to my 265 gal SPS tank which houses my 10 year old Powder Blue Tang.. their are 13 other fish in the tank.. the tangs are great grazers and get along perfectly.. they sure eat a lot of Nori though.

BTW in my tank the 3 Damsels are more Territorial and aggressive then my Tangs

I'm not obsessed with tangs but I do like them. In my 150 6ft I have a purple, naso, yellow, and convict. I also have a maroon clown, harlequin tusk, melanurus wrasse and file fish. Aggression is pretty much non existent with the exception of a brief chase my the purple to one of the others. In my 180 I have a vlamingi, yellow, yellow eye kole, along with a niger trigger, foxface, rabbit fish and zebra moray. The two tanks are plumbed into a shared 125 gallon sump with a bio pellet reactor and chaeto and nitrates stay below 10. I don't test for phosphate because I don't have an algae problem so keeping a clean tank really does not seem to be a problem. One of the things I like about the tangs and all the others as well is they greet me when I walk to the tank rather than hiding and when I'm feeding one tank all the fish in the other stay at one end watching me waiting for theirs. Ick has never been an issue except for powder blues which I have stopped attempting to keep for that reason. Oh I do have a blue hippo growing out in a smaller tank as well. If they get to large it will give me an excuse to step up to a larger tank. I get too attached to my pets to get rid off them. I have a 180 gallon fresh water that I would love to get rid of but have fish that I raised from juveniles to full grown adults and I could not bare to take them to the lfs.

I love fish that hide and you might only see them once or twice a day, kinda makes it feel more natural to me, my system is a very natural one, a bit kinds dirty looking so natural is what I go for, big fish don't appeal to me but that's just my opinion.

Possum Wrasses fit that bill as does the amazingly beautiful Marine Beta :) These are the two that I'll be adding that fit the criteria you noted above. There are many others of course but when I read what you noted I was like yeah - I dig it.

Possum wrasse is something I've been considering and done a bit of research on, I might end up adding one, thanks for the heads up

That would stress me out too much. I don't see fish show up for cattle call/feeding time, and I start scouring the tank looking for a carcass. :)

If we all disregard our love or non interest in tangs for a minute this whole thread can be summed up with one simple question, if your tank is large enough for a tang do you have one? If the majority of people that answer the question says yes then I think it's fair to say the hobby as a whole is obsessed with tangs. I also think it's funny how the word obsessed seems to be met with negative connotations when it's just really a strong interest in something (at least that's the definition here), which isn't an insult and is actually kinda cool.
I don't think it's bad the industry is tang mad but if someone would rather use that bioload for a group of small fish or switch it out for a few wrasse that is fine.

I don't either but have never considered owning one due to their size, disease proneness, and swimming habits. Even when I upgrade to a 180-300 gallon, it will be fairy wrasse/resplendent anthias dominated--I prefer the look of small fish.

Good question. My local shop, which is making my tank, suggested one to me. They had one that sold, but will order whatever. It was a beautiful fish...... guy said he personally has one as well and it “outshines his coral”. They had the one for sale in a reef tank, so apparently pretty reef-safe.

I don't think tangs are overrated, i just think you constantly just see yellow/blue tangs and it gets mundane real fast. But I'm surprised you don't think 'clowns' are overrated, literally 98% of tanks have a clown or two in them.

Agreed that and when a fish hides all the time IMHO it's just an unwanted source of poop/nitrates. I had more than my fair share of that in my old tank with a Purple Firefish that hid almost all the time and Scissortail that would hide half the time.
