Yellow tang price increase

Hello fish friends,

I know there were a couple dozen posts regarding the Hawaii ban. This is another one.

I just came back from my LFS and discovered they listed two new yellow tangs.. at $400/each.

Apparently the owner said to keep a small stock available but at market price of $400. Why? Because fish people are impatient

I am lucky that I bought their last rescue tang 4 weeks ago at only $70. He was a rescue because no one wanted him with a blind eye.

Just curious what other price hikes have people seen lately. Please share! Thank you

I got real lucky and purchased one on 12/03 not even knowing a ban was coming. Purchased a captive bred one that shipped from LA in their Wisconsin facility. He is still in QT due to an ICH outbreak that started with my flame angel. He is in his final 14 day window of observation now and I can’t wait to add him to my DT!!

At time of purchase 12/03, he was $100.00. Little did I know how much of a bargain that was

I used to work in retail. Usually when we get new pricing from the wholesaler, we’d raise the price on existing stock, even if we got the stock at the old price. It’s an easy way to increase profit at the retail level. At first people are angry at the new pricing and blame the retailer, only to find the pricing is down the board.

Well acquainted with bans, proposed bans and market reactions being a avid firearms owner and shooter. That said, I was waiting on a yellow tang as one of my last fish for my 180G but ran out and got one for $80 last week. Glad I jumped when I did!

Same! My tank is almost fully stocked and last fish was a yellow tang. Glad to have one in my community.

I feel they may be collected again. I got mine two years ago for $39.99.

One of the LFS here in CA sells the yellows that they have $150 - $200 depends on how big they are. They have it in the store before the ban.

And now if you had to replace them it would only cost a mere $2500...lol

I was out of the hobby for around 10 years and when I started back I was absolutely shocked that they were around $100.

LiveAquaria has a Hawaiian Yellow Tang for $450 right now, it's crazy. But I guess the good thing is that the Biota ones are about $200 give or take on location so it'll drive the demand for captive bred
