Hello everyone! I've been out of the hobby for about 5 years now and finally decided to get back into it. I previously had an IM Nuvo 30 mixed reef and kept all the equipment. I had planned to use that tank again but after pulling everything out of storage, some how one of my Ai Primes no longer worked, leaving me with only one. I didn't want to buy another one so I decided I'll try a nano reef and spent time looking for a small AIO. I was gifted this vase about a year ago where it sat in my garage and was almost thrown out a few times or was going to be donated. Im glad I didn't because now I am so excited to how this is turning out!

I'm looking forward to using R2R to track my progress and record when livestock is added and track numbers, as this is something I did not do with my last tank.

I had all my old rock that I gave a small bleach bath in since they were sitting in an open bucket outside for 5 years. I rinsed them several times and soaked in FW with a lot of Prime to get rid of any residual bleach and then let them soak in the sun for a few days. I grabbed a 5 gallon bucket and made a batch of salt water and cured them for little over a month with Fritz turbo start.

On April 1st I grabbed a 10lb bag of Carib-sea Bahamas Oolite... ( I did not know how small of a grain this sand is.. it's been a bit annoying to say the least. ) I made my rock scape and filled the bowl. It took about 3 days for the dust to settle with the small Nicrew internal filter.

I have kept the lights off this entire time while cycling and throw in a pellet every now and then for the bacteria.

Evaporation has not been a problem at all. When filling up the tank, I used a dry erase marker and drew the water line to keep track, and I go about a week before noticing it slightly lower. Through out the week I pick up the lid and tip it so the condensation falls back into the tank.

The AI Prime is sitting right on the glass lid. I purchased a diffuser that is vented to keep it from over heating itself and to spread the light evenly through out the bowl. When playing with the light, I do not get any disco ball effect with the diffuser. When I decided where I'll be keeping the vase I am going to put a shelf above it to hang the Prime, but as of now it's looking sleek.

I added my first coral on 4-20-26. A small Sinularia I got from my LFS to have something to look at. Three days in and it is looking great, polyps out and fully extended.

Since adding the frag, I keep my light on from 3:30-9:30, which an hour ramp up and hour ramp down, but only running the AI at about 4w and will increase as needed. With the light on the lid the lighting is really focused right into the bowl so I will be paying close attention if I need to increase/decrease.

And that brings this up to date. I am so excited to watch this grow out. I love Zoas and Ricordias so that will be my main focus. Thank you so much for reading!

Equipment:

- About 6 gallon bowl, 5 gallons with hard scape

-AI Prime HD

-Nicrew Mini internal filter for Flow. 50gph (Might move to air line as many other vase/jar reefs seem to have a lot of success with this)

-Hyyger Nano heater

Stocking:

- 10lbs Carib-sea Bahamas Oolite
- 5lbs reef Rock (I didn't weigh so estimated)
- Sinularia ( added 4/23/26)

Sinularia added 4/20/26. Has opened up nicely. I'm leaving it on the sand bed for now until I plan out my my overall vision for the tank a little more. This coral will most likely outgrow my bowl pretty quickly so I want it to be easily removable when that time comes.

Hello everyone, since my last post, I haven't had much to update on. I was gone for a week long vacation and was worried/curious how the bowl would handle itself. My major concern was the evaporation. I did a gallon water change the night before I left, and marked the water level with a dry erase marker. I left on Saturday morning, and had a house sitting come check in on Wednesday and had her send a photo of the tank and the water level and other than diatoms starting the level was still good!

I came home on Sunday and the water level was still at the line just the lower side of it. I went to my LFS and picked up the first of my CUC and got two snails and one blue legged hermit. He threw in a couple small nassarius snails for free which was nice.

I also picked up a few loose heads of Rastas as it was only $1 per head! They're opening up nicely already. I also added a jar of pods to the tank as I started with all dry rock I didn't have any so hopefully they'll have a good population going.

I'll post an update picture once the tank clears up and the Zoas are fully open!

Small update! I got a decent photo of my Rastas all opened up! There's four heads in total, all opening up great. I changed my AI Prime settings to a preset I found on the AI Prime Facebook called "Salty Pops" that I modified to lower the intensity and shorten the light period to 7.5 hours. I will keep an eye on polyp extension and overall health of the zoas and the Sinularia. With this setting the light is pushing 10W.

I also added an airline today. I have read every journal/posts on Reef Jars/Vases I could find and the one major thing they had in common was running an airline/air pump. I am seeing a very well mix of flow from the detritus I kicked up when cleaning the glass and it seems very random with the flow of the bubbles and the small internal pump I have going. The extension of my Sinularia is already noticeable! This air pump is dead silent. It plugs into an USB outlet which is great if I ever have a power outage which is every now and then through out the year. I hear my Canister filter from my planted tank over this air pump which is a huge deal for me.

This coming Saturday I am going to a small frag/saltwater swap at a nearby town that I'm really excited to pick up a few more corals. The Sinularia was a good test of the waters and these Rastas are already showing promising behavior so I am feeling good about getting a few more zoa frags ( I really have had my heart set on Blue Hornets for a while now) as well as an Orange Ricordia.

I will post some updates come this weekend! Thank you all for reading and following along so far! 1778029653724.png

This morning I noticed a lot of movement in the tank.. not sure if it's an abundance of pods or what but just seems crazy. Any Idea if they're just pods swimming around, and if I should let it all be? My concern would be a die off and cause a nutrient spike..

I should have taken a video, I will after work, but they are actively swimming around everywhere..

Ive never seen this many and they popped up like this overnight so I was surprised. I'll see what happens with the population. The plan is to keep this a fishless tank so their won't be anything to eat them. So we'll just wait and see how it plays out

What size nano were you running? Do you have a build thread?
It was a 6 gallon cube but I don't have it anymore. The filter stopped working and I didn't catch it until it was too late. I lost my upside down gobies, 5 sexy shrimp and a Porcelain Crab. All that survived were my zoas and a pompom crab. I didn't set it back up and just moved what survived into my 125 gallon.

LPS corals will eat pods, having an abundance of them around would probably make for a very happy place for a duncan or something

Providing a quick update! Last Saturday I stopped at a frag swap and picked up some corals! These photos were taken that night, I still have the frags on the sand bed and will move them up a little bit during the weekend as they seem to be stretching. I grabbed some Zoas, not sure the name for $20.

I picked up this two headed splattered hammer for a steal of $10, and the vendor also threw in a bubblegum digi for $10 with the hammer, I know my tank is still new but for the price I couldn't pass it up.

Last but not least I picked up clove polyps that have always been on my list even with my previous tank years ago but never picked up, so excited for that. It's been 4/5 days and everything is opening up well and responding great so all good signs.

The main corals I was looking for at the swap was Blue Hornet Zoas and an Orange Ricordia mushroom but no luck unfortunately.

I'll be posting an update later this coming weekend after I move the frags to their spot and do a small water change.

Thank you for reading!

Good Morning! I took a FTS yesterday after work when the whites were still going. After taking the shot, I turned off the pump but left the airline going and broadcast fed some reef roids. The nassarius snails all came out and hermit crab got excited. The Zoas seemed to respond well and grabbed onto some as well as the hammer and polyps of the Sinularia. I'll be doing a water change tomorrow.
