I Frankensteined my colony. I’ve had it almost a year and no purple ever developed anywhere but the original little slice on the tip. The new frag pic is a piece of the original frag I paid $1600 for. Huge mistake and I regret that purchase more than any I have made in this hobby. So, I cut it off and I’m gonna give that frag a chance to grow the purple. Fingers crossed, we’ll wait another year *sigh*

Man, that is a bummer. I hadn't seen the RB article about it being started with a GFP infection in a pink colony at RR. So I guess it is similar to your Pink Cadillac then, and maybe this did bring in the virus that is moving the gene around.

You know, I’m kinda on the fence about it really. In the corals I see with the GFP infection the green is crazy fluorescent. Even though the article claims that the Splice is a GFP, the Splices green just looks completely different than the GFP pieces I’ve seen. It really puts me in mind of a truly grafted piece. And if you look closely at my colony, you can see shades of purple trying to appear on that lower right side but it just never materializes fully. I’m so new to this grafted/infection stuff that I probably shouldn’t be speculating. Lol. I’m just thinking out loud ....

I’m sorry to all that are bummed theirs doesn’t have more red, but I bought mine specifically for the yellow coloration. A little red would be cool, but I’m really hoping it gives a yellow pop to my tank.

I kind of second this but I do love the red and green mix.

However this green on the rainbow splice is so bright it is almost like a yellow.

Thought I would post this interesting photo. I mentioned in s previous post where I cut a branch I the middle of a red patch. If you look closely at the photo yo can see where the green and red tissue grew over the cut branch. Clearly shows where the red continues to grow

Had the camera out today so I figured I’d macro my Frankensplice. It would appear that i left just enough purple/red to hopefully cause a color frenzy on the new tip or tips like Jeff’s. Looks like there are 2 coralites starting on the cut area....come on baby

The frag is healing nicely. You can see some growth over the super glue line

My all green frag survived an extra day in transit and had polyps extended within an hour of going into warm water. I'm excited to see how it grows.

Nice, shipping has been real risky lately. glad to hear it survived the trip. Let us know how it goes, mine has been a good grower, interested to see how they develop and if some red will come in.

Had the camera out and decided to get some shots of the frag. I was quite stunned to see what has evolved on the back side of the frag that I never see. Check out the series of photos below...

Here is the frag first thing this morning. Based on what I’m seeing, I’ve determined that the green does, in fact, grow faster than the red. I’m not saying it’s that way for everyone, but it’s pretty clear for me based on this frag.

So, I grabbed my baby screw driver (best reef multi tool ever lol) and scraped the green off the left side to give the red room to spread some more. Here is the post surgery shot. Not much, just a little scrape.

Now, when I was doing this, I turned the frag over and was completely stunned...

Cutting this frag seems to have triggered something in the coral. This frag only had a 1/8” x 1/8” streak of red on the “front” of it. You can see that in my previous post. There was no other color on the back side of the frag but green. As you can see in the photo, the red has spread over the top and is spreading down the back side of the coral! I’m at a total loss on how it’s doing that. The green has literally turned red! Pretty wild!

Very cool, maybe you are on your way to a nice green and red colony. I need to look at mine, i have been trying to ignore them. Thinking its like fishing, if you pay too much attention it seems like you get less bites, lol. So maybe if i ignore them they will get some red.

@SweetReefOH That is prettty wild. But you originally bought the frag as a all green splice?
No sir. If you look back at page 1, you will see my colony pic right after I lopped the original frag off of it. The original frag was probably 3/4” - 1” tall and it had a small slice of red about 1/8” x 1/8” on the tip down.

The colony has shot multiple branches and they are all green...

The title on this thread is hilarious and thoughtful.

I thought I would just drop in a pic of this old indo mari piece I have had since 2011. It has morphed and nearly died so many times. It was originally a nice pink/peach colored mili that grew like crazy. Then went brown and outgrew the display and my patience so I hacked out a softball size colony. Chunks of it remain in a few local displays in town, back to the furry pink/peach.

Sadly, it became a flatworm favorite in my frag system so I chopped a few frags and discarded the rest. It has been mistaken for Splice on occasion. Not sure why it isn't so happy anymore though. Keeps dying from the base up, just like this piece is. Cool color, but certainly has lost its mojo. HW to its right.
