Can anyone help out with an ID for this anemone. Came in to the supplier as miscellaneous anemone, the store didn’t know what it was either.

White column, no verrucaes that I can see. Very unusual tentacles, branching off and shaggy, red/purple in colour. Outer rim has normal transparent tentacles with coloured tips. Base is fluro green. Mouth like a normal anemone.

The tentacles are just very odd. They’re like a st Thomas’ mushroom. It’s really hard to get a good shot of them

Think I’ve ID’d it as Heterodactyla

Orion you may be able to confirm?

I can say for sure that it is not one of the host anemone. Other than that we need much more detail pictures.
I am not sure what it is but I think it is unlikely to be a Heterodactyla hemprichii (Hell's Fire anemone) because:
1. No verrucae as indicated by the OP
2. The way this anemone was handle, it does not seem to have potent sting. Not any where near the name "Hell's fire" suggested
3. H. hemprichii has these round tentacles not seen in these pictures.

If we know the area where it come from, we can go look to see if we can find something that match.
Beautiful anemone. I would buy it if I see it at m LFS.

It’s def not got a sting but I don’t think it’s the best health, had trouble getting it to attach and not very responsive to touch. Trying it with its foot in a rock crevice. I’m pretty certain it didn’t have verrucae, if it did it was very high up and similar the base colour but I’m sure it didn’t when I looked. Tentacles are def not round, they’re branched - but Heterodactyla look very very similar testicle shape from Google

this page have the most clear and detail description of this species, Heterodactyla hemprichii
https://actiniaria.com/heterodactyla_hemprichii.php

This one particular picture clearly show the verrucae and the bulb tentacles in among the other type of tentacles

Def not a match to that.

The ones at the end of the OP in the above (no ID anemones) look similar tentacles too. I’ll try and find out what area they’re from.

Orion whilst I have you. I picked up a malu from the same LFS. The tentacles are really really stubbly, almost like a carpet, it’s def a malu (rings on tenticles). Have you seen this before? Will they get longer?

You just got to get better picture without the blue coloration. It his difficult to see under blue light.
Wait until the anemone settle down and less stress you can see how it change.
If it is a H. malu, it's tentacles will elongate and get better. Malu has color foot, my were yellow, orange or brown with change to white on top. Difficult to see since invariably, they burry their foot as soon as we put them into our tank.

There are many undescribed non clownfish hosting anemones. I am sure this anemone is one of them. Heterodactyla hemprichii have that berries like tentacles near the edge which is not present, that I can see, in this anemone. I read the thread by Dr. Mack you posted above. Interesting and mostly unknow species of non clown fish hosting anemones with a few know species in that thread. All beautiful, with striking unusual colorations.

Hell’s fire anemones are from the genus Actinodendron.

Heterodactyla hembrichii is not a Hell’s fire anemone. Only the verrucae sting. I can see the verrucae quite clearly on some of the pictures in the first post.
