So I have everything for fish QT. I mixed water and wanted to setup the tank for a nem that’s not looking good. Is doing the setup
Just like fish? Seeded sponge, heater, hob, light, powerhead and air stone along with pvc?

I am getting some bactrim tomorrow for possible bacteria infection.

tank is 10 months old. Have 5 fish, 2 bta, 7 rock flowers, small ricordea and small 7-9 head zoa on a plug.

one bta I’ve had since August and has done great the whole time and tripled in size. This other bta I’ve had since November and was doing great until 2 weeks ago. Closed up and has moved around every day since. Sometimes kinda opens a little but tentacles not extending. Yesterday almost looked like it’s mouth was turning inside out or very swollen. It was on my sandbed so I scooped it up and put in an acclimation box. Quickly after it looked much better but mouth was wide and tentacles still not extending.

so, made some water and ready to put it in Qt but want to make sure my setup is correct. Do I need to worry about ammonia? Should I take tank water instead of new water? I assume i need to use the seeded sponge.

reading a couple posts about cipro looks like you basically transfer to new qt daily. So do I even bother with the seeded sponge or transfer that daily as well? Add any mb7?

Not sure if video will work. Just got home. Seems like there is a slime coat or something on it coming off. You can see my other nem and the small zoas. First time seeing the black ice hosted which is interesting.

@Amoo saw your post for treating nems. Mine is probably a 7. Do you mind reading my post and comment? I planned on moving it tonight to a QT setup. I’m getting the bactrim today.

since you do 12hr shifts at first I guess I need to do one tonight, then fill other tank in morning before work then tomorrow night and then switch to 24hrs. But I’m curious on dosage for the bactrim.

Well, I had to just make a decision due to condition of nem. Not using the sponge, pvc or hob. Leaving it in acclimation box since it’s attached. Put it in qt last night and added 1 pill dissolved of sulfamethoxazole. Also grabbed an actinic bulb since they didn’t have a blue or coral plus at petco in 18”

First pic is when I first put it in the QT. Next was this morning. I thought it was too late since you could basically see through the base of the foot and no visible mouth. This morning, huge difference. I’ll put it in a second qt with fresh water tonight and the cipro should arrive today so I’ll use that.

First, I think Amoo hasn't been here at R2R since Dec 2018, a loss for the site for sure!

I'm a huge anemone fan, but I claim very limited expertise.

I have had 2 kinds of luck with anemones that appear to be not doing well. Some get better all by themselves and others just deteriorate and die. I've never tried any medications.

I think as far as your QT situation, you are right on the mark. In fact I pull sick nems out of the DT and put them in a simple 8" tall 40oz peanut butter jar with tank water. Then every 8 hours I'll dump 50% to 90% of the water down the drain and refill the jar with more water from the tank. If it appears very sick I'll do changes every 4 hours, if it looks more healthy I'll do it every 12 hours.

I collected 2 anemones off the beach on Sanibel Island, FL (not in the water at all). It was during a high point in a Red Tide event. My wife and I wanted to see just how bad it was. I did a 50% water change when I got them home and a 90% water change every 12 hours after that. In just a couple of days they appeared to be doing OK. But I was afraid the Red Tide might get into my tank, so I kept them in the jar for 6 weeks. They attached to the jar and opened up and looked healthy. At the end of 6 weeks I put them in my DT and they moved to a dark location and dug themselves into the sand. They survived for several years there.

I'm glad to read that yours may be doing better. I'll follow here for updates. Good luck.

There are some people here who have been asked to help as volunteers to answer questions and generally watch over the R2R website. We have a badge at the left that says we are in the Reef Squad. And using the # with reefsquad after it will send all of us an alert that you are looking for help.

Using the @ and a users name will send a notice to that specific user.

I'm glad to hear that your nem appears to be doing better. Anemones are one of most favorite animals. They are just so alien looking and yet we can keep them in our tanks and they even breed in our tanks.

Thank you @Ron Reefman. Is the #reefsquad a standard hashtag to alert others?

Wife sent me some pics at lunch. Hoping this is road to recovery. I’ll be using cipro tonight like I mentioned.

Looks like you are doing all the right things. Nems can be tricky and unpredictable at times. Keep us posted. I'm already liking the way it is looking. I too am no nem expert.

In the last few pictures, the BTA seem OK. i am not 100% sure if he even need treatment. BTA rarely need treatment. Give it low light and low flow and he should recover.

@OrionN i think it did need something. It showed no sign of getting better in my DT. Seemed to slowly get worse every day. When I put him in the QT tank you can see my first post you can’t even see a mouth. Literally looked like a hole and you could see through the foot. Like it was a thin piece of flesh. Nothing to the foot. The second pic in my first post was within hours of treatment.

Put him in a fresh qt tank with the cipro now. Simply amazing the difference in 24hrs. Really even 12hrs was a drastic change. I have an actinic 18” fluorescent bulb on the 10g hood. Once I turned it off the nem reacted and started closing.

when I transferred to the other tank it took a few to acclimate but started opening. Here are some pics tonight. First couple were immediately after transfer. Last two were about 30min later.

HE is looking very well o the last picture there. I would continue treatment and give him light and low current. He should do well.
Good luck and keep up the good work. The key is keep the condition stable. A long as you don't feed him, water change with med is all you need. Skimmer, ammonia treatment ect. is not needed.

thanks. Yup, basic setup. Not even using a hob. Air stone, heater, powerhead, heater and fresh water daily is the plan with med.

I agree with OrionN. Looks like it should bounce back, even without meds.

It was degrading daily. First pic post 5 showed no mouth and basically a hole in the foot. This morning it’s looking dang good. Tentacles are starting to expand a little and fill after just a few minutes of lights on. I’ll continue with meds. The guy that started the med thread here references a guy on reef central. I’m not going to stop meds just because it’s looking better. 7 days is recommended so I’ll continue that. Like a person, just cause symptoms subside a day after meds you still take them for time period you’re suppose to.

Exactly, Stopping antibiotics early is how you ended up with antibiotic resistant pathogens, Same as in people.
Glad to see the nem is on his way back to good health!
