Another Red Sea Failure...Viewer Discretion Advised

I have two RSR and this is my big fear! The odds of it never happening seems bad, the odds of having a seam failure is good, and the odds of it happening when I’m not home is even better. I check the seams almost daily and have water leak sensors on the floor in case I luck out and get a trickle before a flood (assuming I’ll be home). I also have emergency trash bins to mitigate the damage an have cameras on both tanks. I doubt any of this will help when/if it happens, but hopefully the fish gods will look with favor on me that dreaded day…. What else are other tanks owners doing to mitigate a burst tank???

At this point, there should just be a RS Tank Failure forum on R2R. It would probably be the 2nd most active forum on this site after the Reef Aquarium Discussion forum.

More tanks don't ever fail than do but it sure takes some of the pleasure out of having one

Let me pose a question: Does any other manufacturer have issues with tanks leaking? I am sure there are some. I never hear about others, even older tanks that have been moved several times. Maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

There are plenty of tanks that have leaks but the problem here is...most of these tanks fail at the same spot. Bad silicone is seemingly the culprit but who knows. My previous post was a joke saying they wouldnt cover their own warranty at their office if management had changed bc it would mean theres technically a 2nd owner lol.

I assumed it was a joke, but from what I see posted, they don't do anything. I see enough negative posts about their tanks, so I won't buy anything from RedSea.

This statement is not true, as most man made things (including glass aquariums) do eventually fail as time and entropy or stray bullets from an angry roommate or rival gang member can also cause an aquarium to lose its ability to hold its water. As I am texting and strolling through Walmart in the Depends Adult diaper isle I am reminded that many people struggle to hold their water, especially as they age but the biggest frustrations occur when a young person is struggling with untimely loss of ability.

Last Wednesday I visited a dear family who lost a 22 year old daughter in a fatal car accident that took 4 young adults, thankfully these incidents and aquarium seam failures are not common but they are certainly not a source of pleasure and too common for comfort and rarely welcomed by most.

I hope we don’t get any more tank failure threads for the rest of the year.

I agree and I'm always saying everything is going to fail it's just a matter of when. I chose my words wrong and should have inserted prematurely fail.
Sorry to hear about the loss of life of your family member and the others. Loosing a child has always been a fear of mine as a parent.

Always sad to see these threads. I hope your brother is able to get their situation sorted out, that really sucks.

For people wondering why people keep buying these tanks, I suspect it's a mix of things. I know a guy who's looking to get a bigger tank and specifically wants a RedSea tank. They know about the failures, but I guess they consider the newer generations to be safe enough / are more risk tolerant or don't think it'll happen to them / and maybe expect they'd be able to catch an issue before the tank fails completely.
The other thing they have mentioned multiple times is that they like the look of RedSea tanks and that they can get a complete package and don't need to piece together their own setup.

I think that last bit is really the key part. RedSea has a visually appealing package with all the parts included which appeals to people who don't want to deal with a ton of research and just want a more turnkey solution that's supposed to work right out of the box.
I'm not gonna say that approach is good or bad, it's just different than my personal approach (and probably the approach of a lot of people here) and with that in mind it kinda makes sense why they still sell a lot of tanks.

Oh I totally agree.

I've thought before that reef keeping is sort of the antitheses of instant gratification. Yes there are plenty of moments that are immediately satisfying, but there's also a loooootttt of stuff that just takes time but is profoundly satisfying once you get there.

Truly is the best pay off after waiting and working over time. The sense of accomplishment and the joy of real lasting success is hard to beat and in the end usually less costly.

Many of the early failures were burst bottom front seams on larger tanks that burst and drain quickly. I think that's one reason RS originally thought the cause was lacking of a center vertical support on the stands. Their so closed mouthed about the problem even if they do correct the issue and change the silicone being used i doubt they'll ever publicly state that. Posts like this will just become fewer. Unfortunately with the Gen 3 being new it will be a while before we know if the issue is corrected or not.

It's building aquariums. This ain't rocket science that should require interative design improvements. We are solidly 20 years into the rimless fad being a thing and making a watertight glass box has been pretty well figured out for 70 years. RedSea just puts money into marketing instead of QC. They found their market though and the guys up top certainly made more than I'll over make so congrats on that I guess.
