Bicolor angels not going thru PVC

Whimsical post of the day but...

I have a 20G Long FOWLR that has two bicolor angels (sole occupants, paired).

I added a PVC pipe for their amusement, and my own curiosity to see what they would do. They peck at it but even after 24 hours and trying a longer and shorter tube, they don't swim thru it or go into it and largely ignore it. I now have both pipes stacked so that one is higher, hoping they might venture in.

I've seen fish practically live inside PVC at LFS's without rock. What gives?

This is not a permanent thing but trying to understand fishies.

I wouldn’t give it a second thought. a) we must all admit that at the end of the day, a white PVC pipe is highly unnatural for a fish from the ocean, and b) when they get in your display tank with rock work, that’s the real game anyway. Aside from that, I hope they do well for you, overall. They are absolutely some of the best looking fish in the ocean, but both of mine didn’t make it more than a few months. I tried, then I tried a second time. I’ve never build up the nerve to try a third time.

I've had them for 23 days now and they seem hardier than my clown fish. Eat endlessly, no sign of disease, paired, etc.

Maybe it is a sign that they aren't stressed enough that they feel the need to hide.

I have actually wondered that. I gave them the Four Seasons, I think they're pretty happy.

... perhaps more importantly, fish in the LFS tanks are super stressed, so comparing what they do in a store to my tank here, is a bit of an apples to oranges.
