Man...that hammer REALLY grew a lot in a year! Impressive!
Thanks! Yeah that hammer is getting a bit ridiculous. Think I might have to trim it down at some point, though I would hate to do it. I have moved some other corals out of the way to give it more space.

You got a really nice setup there.. Thanks for stopping by my thread sorry I don't have much interesting going on yet. lol
Thanks! Your thread has plenty of interesting stuff! The start of the build is some of the most exciting and important parts.

Corals are really doing well right now. I was keeping up with alkalinity and calcium demands by mixing kalkwasser in to my ato water. About a month and a half ago my alkalinity demands really spiked, so I have been hand dosing Alk and Ca daily. I still run my ato water fully saturated with kalkwasser and now I also hand dose 4.5 ml of both Ca and Alk in the morning and late evening for a 9 ml daily total of each. I try to space some time between the Alk and Ca dosings to avoid precipitation. Seems to be working well and I think my corals are responding to the added stability. I think I will be looking into investing in some dosing pumps soon.

So Friday morning I was getting ready to do some tank maintenance and a water change. I had noticed the night before a small white area on one of my purple acro colonies. Everything else looked good and I thought it might be some new growth so I disregarded it. So Friday morning I get my turkey baseter and blow around one of my purple acro colonies and a huge cloud emerges. After a stunned moment, and after the debris settles, I see a bone white colonie and my heart sinks. I do the same to the two other purple acros, and the same thing happens. I then look to the rest of my sps and put my brave face on, and do the same again. Luckily they don’t succumb to the same fate as their purple brethren. So for the rest of the weekend I watch everything closely (with my fingers crossed) and everything looks great. Polyp extension on all sps, and all the softies and lps look fine. No temp swings, Alk swings, ph swings, salinity swings that I know of. No pests that I can detect. So after a few days of going over my habits and trying to think of a culprit, the only thing I can think of is that I had recently wiped off the salt creep to my kessil light (which hadn’t been done in a while) and not lowered the intensity afterwards. Other than that I’m at a lose, and everything else seems to perfectly fine. I did lower the intensity by 10 percent to be safe. Sooooooo.......fingers still crossed and hoping everything remains okay for a few weeks......and then I guess I will be forced to get some new frags.

And just a note, the picks above were taken immediately after the turkey baster incident. By the next morning there was no coral tissue left on any of the affected colonies.

After my issue with RTN wiping out several acropora colonies, I decided to invest in some dosing pumps. I currently run full saturated kalkwasser in my ATO. However, with the canopy I don’t have much evaporation and was needing 2 part dosing to keep stability. I was hand dosing Calcium and Alkalinity in the morning and at night and spacing at least a half hour between the two to avoid precipitation. I don’t think I overdosed, or had an Alk swing, but automating this task with a slow doser became essential in my mind.

I purchased two used BRS 1.1 milliliter per minute dosers on the r2r marketplace from a fellow hobbyist. Just received them, tested them and installed them.........I really like them . Hopefully my new acropora really like them too.

About 2 weeks ago I was able to stop by my friends place, he runs a mature 8o gallon reef, and pick up some new frags. I’m very lucky I have such an awesome source of info and someone who needs to get rid of coral trimmings. Anyways, he had a large chunk of purple acropora, a good size frag of joe the coral, two good frags of an unnamed teal acropora, two small frags of a birds nest, and a very nice frag of an unnamed purple acropora with green polyps (acropora cerealis perhaps). I waited two weeks before posting anything because I didn’t want to jinx anything. So far everything seems to be doing well. I really hope the large purple colony holds up and my luck changes with that particular coral.

Pic update. Had the day off, so I did water change and some equipment cleaning. Took a few pictures. Also, my DIY fill lights stopped working properly, so I bought another kessil a160 we. My plan is to run 2 a160s. Haven’t fitted it to the canopy yet. Might be few weeks before I find the time. I will update once I get that done.
