I recently dosed chemi-clean in my 5 ft 125 and put 13 scoops for a bad cyano outbreak. after 48 hours I noticed that the cyano was entirely unchanged since I dosed it, I don't have any other form of mechanical filtration, no filter sponge or carbon, just a protein skimmer. I put air stones and left the skimmer on without the collection cup so nothing was collected, but does a protein skimmer still collect stuff even without the cup? I am ready for a water change like the product instructed, but should I do the water change and redose, or should I put more chemi-clean in the tank and not have the protein skimmer on?

Did you first manually remove water you could? Some times if its a large outbreak it wont break down easily unless you remove some. Also I've seen it take 3 to 4 days with lights out for it to really take hold. Thats total darkness. Ive even had to block ambient light a few times as indirect sun light will also slow the process.

Do the water change. Put skimmer cup back on. You’ll have to adjust the skimmer because it will want to foam and flood for a few days. I left the air stones going until it was normal again. Shouldn’t be a reason to dose again. Are you sure it’s cyano? Maybe it’s Dino’s? Chemiclean seems to kill cyano off in 48 hours. Did you add correct dose amount?

A lot of members here frown on Chemi-Clean's use because it's an antibiotic, and can potentially impact the beneficial biome as well as the Cyano. Personally, I've used Chemi-Clean a few times before I knew of these concerns; zero issues that I noticed.

Chemi-Clean can sometimes take two doses, but I agree with previous posters that you need to manually remove what you can. It should blow off the rocks and sand easily with a turkey baster, then you can siphon it out. If it doesn't easily blow off with your trusty baster, it is likely not Cyano.

Try to manually remove as much as you can, and consider another round of the Chemi-Clean (if you're comfortable with its use). Make sure to add an air stone or two and it can reduce the available oxygen in the system.

Try to turn your lights off when you dose the Chemi-Clean. You can safely do a few days of no light even if you have corals.

Feel free to post up a pic or two for positive ID.

Good luck!

Should I do the water change before the second dose or afterwards?

I believe the instructions for the Chemi-Clean product suggest doing a water change before redosing.

Are you absolutely sure you have Cyano?

As mentioned above before dosing Chemi-clean you should siphon out as much of the cyano as possible. Even now that is something you should do at the recommended interval for a water change post dosage since then siphoning process could remove a lot of water if you have a major outbreak.

You should also test your parameters to see what you need to do on the nutrient front. Why aren’t you using any sort of mechanical filtration (other than skimmer)?

Post a photo of the cyano in white light. Maybe it is not cyano and hence the chemi-clean does not work.

And yes, get a filter sock in the sump, and a vinyl tubing to gravity syphon into sock as much as possible.
