I recently got 2 new clams a derasa and a maxima, I have a black perc that loves to knock them over and out of the clam pedestals that I have them in. They start doing well and opening up and he will just push them out and off the pedestals. I am hoping the maxima will attach to a small rock I have buried in the sand but he starts to attach then he comes along and does his thing. I am afraid he is going to stress them out and kill them if he keeps doing this. Any suggestions? I am limited on space where I can move them to I have an all SPS tank and its full to the brim with coral. I am about to flush this thing...
Edit: please refrain from using symbols to get past the filters thanks TL

I feel your pain bro just please refrain from the harsh words and symbols used to create them... I'll let the title slide but the fbomb is not acceptable... Now that's out of the way..

Have you tried a little bit of epoxy maybe to hold it in place??? The clown should be easy enough to remove if he needs a time out until the clams acclimate most clowns swim right to your hand and bite it lol...

What you can do is take a Gatorade or similar bottle and cut it in half. Then take one half and fill it with 1/4" holes for water circulation. Then place it over the clam to kind of shield it from the Clownfish. Another thing you can build is a cage out of eggcrate and place it over the clam to shield it. Once the clams are attached you can remove the shield and see if the fish can move them.

My bad about the F bomb wont happen again. My clown hosts in a goniopora and he loves to bite. Will the derasa foot on rock? I thought they were non attaching and I moved it off the pedestal and right on to my sand bed, so far he seems to leave it alone, I took about half of the sand out of the pedestal the maxima is in and moved the rock deeper in so it is shielded from the clown so far he cant get into the pedestal to knock it out. If not ill try the egg crate. Thanks to all for the input!

What type of lighting do you have, and how deep is the tank?

The Derasa should be fine on the sand if your lighting is sufficient.

Can you post some pic's of the clams?

29g JBJ HQI 150w 20k Radium, lights on for 7 1/2 hrs per day, mp10 on random reef crest set about 75% night mode for 10hrs when lights go off. I have pretty good flow they seem not to mind the flow so far, they open as soon as lights come on and look good. I will get some pics up tomorrow afternoon. I'm religious with water changing every week, I test cal, KH, MG about every day to keep these in line ,CA stays steady at 470, KH steady at 9-10 I dose 2 part near end of the week after water change, tank starts to use it up quick about 3 days after water changes. I run a chiller, temp is steady at 77-78.

i like the bottle idea, but the eggcrate idea is new to me...as long as the clowns can't get through the holes, this sounds like a great idea

Derasa should be fine on the sand but it will outgrow your 29g very quickly as they are the fastest growing of the giant clams.

I have a pic of a eggcrate cage in my PB somewhere, if I can find it I will post it up.

Cool thanks, I knew through researching they were fast growers the one I got is about 2.5", I am planning on upgrading to a larger tank at the end of the year so I should be good?
