Another species to look at if you want a group would be one of the dart fish (Zebra Barred goby, Scissor tail, Blue Gudgeon) They are pretty cool fish and seem to do ok in groups.

Edit.....do not try to keep a group of any Nemateleotris genus dartfish.

I have a group of 9. I was thinking i have had them about a year but pulled out my log and its just over 2 years. I have lots of sleeping holes in my rockwork, I think that is important. Also I have 1 dominant fish. He has developed different patterning than the others and is larger. Might be important, might not. I love them as they do swim together a lot.

I skipped those common blue/green ones and went with 6 Black and White Chromis. 1 died in Qurantine. 1 died later in display. The 4 are still alive and healthy. Fiesty fellas they are with smaller fish. They claim their own caves/holes in the rocks. Only had them for 4-5 months.

I have 3 that have survived and get along with one another and the rest of my tank. They do love to eat. I give em flake, pellet and various frozen meaty bits. I think they like to hunt pods too, I see mine pecking around often. From my little experience they seem to live up to the reputation of being pretty peaceful.

Survival rates I see reported do seem to often indicate a lot of die off. Maybe due to the sources and how they are handled. I think I bought 3, two died, then bought 4 more and 2 of those survived. Honestly I think it had less to do with the environment they went into and more to do with everything leading up to that. Two or 3 of the ones I received looked really rough out the gate and just died within a week.

Every time ive ever tried groups of chromis they all slowly get picked off. I gave up years ago after two attempts ending in the same thing. For a fish that people claim to school together, I’ve always just had them duke it out.

Currently got 4 green ones I got them in February 2019 all still going strong in a 65 gallon tank with lots of rock work and hiding places.

Forgive me for this post but-
To all the posters on this thread my question is which 'Green Chromis' did you have, there are at least 4 varieties which go under that common name- Altrichthys alelia, Chromis viridis, C. Atripectoralis or maybe C. Caerulea (stop press! A couple more Altrichthys have been identified which look similar to 'Green chromis').

Until you can give a definite ID all the comments on here about success or failure are meaningless.

Yes, often times worse than chromis.

Started with 6 blue green chromis, three years later I have 4. Were in a 180 gal, now 275. They do hang out close to each other. The two birdsnest corals give them plenty of hiding spots to swim in and out of.

I had a conversation with one of the managers from WWC. With my new build I would like to start off with easy going schooling fish. When I brought up chromis he said don’t waste your time they won’t last or they will pick each other off. In the 1500 lagoon tank they placed 200 and it now has 0. I can’t remember the amount of fire fish but they too are very limited. He did mention the zebra bar dart fish and of course anthias if you can get them to eat.

Hi all,
I started with seven a year and a half ago. They sorted it out pretty quickly and lost 2. The five now r super healthy and getting big. Pretty sure it’s all about the feedings. Multiple feedings means less aggression. Also having other fish might help as an additional deterrent.
I noticed that when a chromis was selected to die it was hit by all fish in one particular spot. The damage looked very similar to uronema.

Yeh I don’t get it, the way they like to be schooled together, I have tried the recommended females for schooling but either way start with 10-20 and end up with 1 or 2. Always have been in 170-250 gallon tanks

I had 5 of them. All went well for about the first 5 months. Even feeding them daily, they slowly picked each other off until only one remained. The last one went into some sort of shock, and died.

And folks there it is. I think the Chromis idea is out the window. I did purchase 4 anthias from Saltwaterfish.com 2 years ago. all of them made it through QT. I had 4 beautiful females. I now have 3 now in which one turned male. I am not sure what happened to 1 of them as I never saw the body. The 3 are great I have no problems other than the male being somewhat aggressive at times toward the other two.
