@vetteguy53081 back fins of cardinal appear to be rotting. I also saw it spit a white powdery/stringy substance out of its mouth.

It’s really tough to say what’s going on, but my thought is that this is end stage, uncontrolled ich with secondary bacterial infections. The material hanging out of the cardinal is mucus feces, not sure what that’s about unless the fish hadn’t been eating for some number of days.

@Jay Hemdal I'd like to try and save my clowns and Tang. I have Cupramine, Hannah Checker, and Kanaplex or Metroplex. Established 30g breeder I can make bare bottom quickly with pvc pipes. Should I FW dip on the way in? How quickly should I increase Copper? And should I get going with Kanaplex or Metroplex right away?

No FW dip. Get to 0.50 ppm today. Skip the metroplex, it’s redundant to copper. Kanaplex - maybe start it tomorrow. Use some non calcium bio media from the existing tank if you can. All exposed fish are going to need to be treated and then the DT held fishless for 60 days.

@Jay Hemdal I have MarinePure Ceramic Cubes that are made of an inert ceramic material. I think they should work.

Do I wait to start adding Copper until fish are in QT? And how quickly can I ramp up to .50?

The cardinal shows signs of aggression likely from clowns and needs to be isolated for best chance of healing. The feces trailing the fish likely from foods fed especially if feeding mysis shrimp which often leads to excess mucus in stomach lining f fed mysis daily

You can ramp it up in two doses; calculate what you think a half dose would be, add it, let it mix for a couple of hours, then test. You then adjust the second dose to hit 100%. The next day, test again and adjust if needed.

@Jay Hemdal do you recommend an air stone during copper?

Yes -all tanks need some sort of active aeration - air stones are the easiest way to supply that in small tanks. Copper doesn't cause oxygen to become lower like prazi does, but the fish themselves strip oxygen from the water.

@Jay Hemdal The 40g Breeder has an HOB filter and a small powerhead directed at the surface. I got the two clowns in last night with a 50% dose of copper. Male died overnight but female looks good (less spots, normal behaviour, eating, no secondary symptoms) and copper has been increased to full strength. Hoping she's gonna make it. FWIW, she was the only fish that made it through a velvet outbreak two years ago (which I treated with fallow and copper in QT).

Starting Kanaplex with Focus today. Would you still recommend adding an air stone?

Wait - don’t treat kanaplex in focus! Oral antibiotics are tricky and kanaplex is toxic if you get the dose wrong. The dose is tiny, on the order of 30 mg per kg of fish, so just a few mg for a fish this size. Safer to dose the water.

@Jay Hemdal Kanaplex instructions say 125mg per 5 gallons. I've got about 35 gallons so that would be 875mg. Would you recommend dosing much less? How many kg do you think a female storm trooper clown is?

I'm confused - the in-water dose would be 1 level measure per 5 gallons. I would dose your tank for 30 gallons, assuming there are things that display some water, and that the tank isn't filled to the brim. That would be 6 level measures. Repeat every two days for a maximum of 3 doses.

If you REALLY want to try oral meds, you'll need a precision digital scale. This article I wrote discusses how to estimate the weight of fish for oral meds:

OK got it.

My Yellow Tang is still in the display and is looking very healthy. Fat, bright, voracious eating nori and frozen food, picking on rocks, etc. He hasn't had any spots since I started using Reef Medic 11 days ago. Is it possible that Reef Medic coupled with better water chemistry have just allowed him to overcome the ich for now? I know it's still in the system.

I've killed just about every fish I have put through QT and would prefer to wait on moving him there until the hospital tank cycles and the clown pulls through (or doesn't).

Am I crazy to wait on getting the Yellow Tang in the there? Tearing down the reefscsape is gonna take a lot!

The ich may have gone into remission, but often that is just temporary. Yellow tangs are also slightly more resistant to it than fish with cycloid scales are.
