Eunice worms

Got him! I guess I killed him b/c he’s not moving anymore at all.

I could tell from viewing through the glass that he wasn’t very big or long, but how can I know if I’ve got the whole worm and not just the top half or 3/4?

I pulled him out w/tongs about an inch or two behind his head.

Man, I was avoiding that all day. Then I just now was like, ugh I’m gonna go for it. Had the thick gloves on up to my elbows and went in w/the tongs. Wasn’t nearly as bad as I’d imagined in my head.

What I would be doing is trying to remember what the back end looked like ( if ever seen both ends at same time) and inspect to see if looked same.
If used tongs whilst it was in burrow in sand or partly inside,then get something to gently rake through sand to see if can find Anymore parts, or scoop up a few cupfulls of sand in and around its burrow.
Start a siphon back into your sump or a bucket into a filter sock to catch the sand and re-use the water or class it as a wc.
Failing that start a thread asking if anyone experienced with eunuce worms and show picture of both ends to try get someone to verify.

But to me it looks clearly like front end and bottom end and nowhere looks like part been severed off but I'm no marine biologist, but think it would be pretty clear if piece ripped off tbh and dont think you would have the protruding parts at rear if ripped off imo

Agree, I googled pics and that does look like the actual back end. I’m so relieved rn. At least until the next thing comes up…

Agree that it looks whole and that a severed back end wouldn’t look like what is in your photo.

The tail section died within a few days, but the other two parts remain alive.Marine biologist Dr Nicholas Higgs - who works at Plymouth University's Marine Institute and was a PhD student at the Natural History Museum in London - said: "Many species of bristle worm have the ability to regenerate parts of their body, even the head or tail.

"This allows them to reproduce asexually, creating 'clones' of themselves."

Snippet from this article,the tail section died but other 2 parts of the large worm survived.
And read several times over the years,( had to double check before posting,as grew up getting tood cut an eartworm in half and you have 2 worms but found out when grew up,not always the case and goes by the species of worm and was sure read that not all severed parts of a eunice re-grows etc) they can regenerate parts that got severed but not always,so even if missed a part that got severed,doesn't automatically mean will grow back the head part and survive ,but for peace of mind,off course want to check and be doubly sure ha ha .
