The US government has committed 26 BILLION dollars to Climate change programs.

And well they should. It's a huge problem that is coming like a Mack truck, and the unprepared have much less chance of being happy after the impact.

That 26B is not all money to figure out if it is happening. That's already figured out, much that the climate change deniers would lead you to believe otherwise. Details and model improvements are definitely worth pursuing so governments can know the magnitude and timing of the issue, but much of that is to deal with the established problem that the earth is warming.

In even the wildest of fantasies, there is nowhere near that kind of money available for contrarian research. It's an opinion (more money available for "bad" results than good) based on merit of the numbers, not on faith.
https://www.gao.gov/key_issues/climate_change_funding_management/issue_summary

None of he research money is earmarked to show a particular result (that is not how US government grants work), despite that being the mantra of the climate deniers that if only their side got as much attention, everything would would be fine.

Fortunately, science and truth are not determined by vote.

Below is an image of corals exposed at low tide at the Great Barrier Reef. These corals are exposed temperature swings day after day. And have been for thousands of years. They look pretty healthy. Having a hard time believing a small change in temperature would be the cause of bleaching.

I've deleted my initial response to this post, as I honestly believe there is net-zero to be gained by either party in continuing this particular exchange. This is meandering off into politics, policy, and best uses of government spending, not a road I which to continue to travel, unless we were in a pub enjoying pints :). I doubt either of us is going to sway the other's opinion in any meaningful fashion, so as the saying goes, (other than your last line, with which I agree with wholeheartedly) perhaps it's best if we just agree to disagree.

Cheers!

Please name a single chlorofluorocarbon that has a natural source that is significant relative to man man made versions.

Most knowledgeable sources say none exist.

https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/monitoring-references/faq/greenhouse-gases.php?section=cfc

"Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have no natural source, but were entirely synthesized"

http://apps.sepa.org.uk/spripa/Pages/SubstanceInformation.aspx?pid=114

"There are not thought to be any natural sources of CFCs to the environment."

Sorry I was thinking of CO2. There is so much mis-information coming from those that are desperately hoping our planet is doomed that sometimes it is hard to keep up!

You are totally correct manueldm!!!! Totally! Corals will grow faster with warmer waters and actually prefer warmer waters. The minimal amount of die off is in the cooler areas! Also the oceans level has dropped in the Barrier reef area. It has not risen as some say.
Let me also say, THE UNITED STATES HAS BEEN THE LEADER IN Co2 emission drops for years!!! We are NUMBER ONE!!!
The reason we have pulled out of the Paris Accord is because its unfair to the American Tax payers and workers! We are restricted down even more, when China and other countries have no restrictions at all!
Furthermore, it will raise our energy costs. Do you want to pay more for energy? For everything? Because higher energy raises costs on food and everything else.
Please find below a video on Climate change and its effects on the barrier Reef. "Note" one man is a CLIMATE PHYSICIST!!! The other is a atmospheric Physicst! No one on here holds that title. Please correct me if I am wrong and you are more qualified.
We do not need to pay other countries money. If anything. They need to pay us. Please comment on Video!

Of course, you were the one to post misinformation. Kind of ironic, isn't it? lol

It's really hard for the conversation not to get into politics you are right. Unfortunately, for every reasonable person that wants to continue to look at data (and critique it, like you've done which is fine - peer review obviously), there are ten more that just want to cut funding for it, cut scientists out of the relative agencies based on their position on the issue (sound familiar?), or inject anecdotes and non-science into the debate (as you have seen in this thread).

That coral does not look bleached to me at all! And it gets direct sun day in and day out. Im not buying it! I have ran my tank at 76 and then switched to 79. over the course of about 2 months. I get much faster coral growth! No problems at all.

Also the oceans level has dropped in the Barrier reef area. It has not risen as some say.

That comment is based on what data?

If you look at the monthly ocean level data from the two measuring sites run by the Australian government that are near the Great Barrier Reef, there's a clear upward slope to the mean tide levels from 1991 to today.

That said, local effects are often made worse or made less bad by local land uplift and subsidence, so no local data can say what is happening worldwide.

Never denied that bleaching is occurring. Respectfully disagree on the cause.
I don't think scientists know with as great a certainty the reason for reef issues (at least to the same level as, say, AGW). I also questioned things like the PH dropping slightly or temperature changes because, like many, we have our own tanks to compare. But we have to understand our tanks are anecdotal evidence at best. We're not even sure what the corals in our own tanks need (look at the debate from ULNS to now higher nutrients) and, as has been said many times on this and other forums, every tank is different. I think that is where you let people that are trained in that field provide their findings and have it peer reviewed as opposed to pointing to any single example.

The Netflix documentary Chasing Coral, which you have probably heard about or already watched shows the effects of global warming and climate change on our planet. While many scientists and others are on board with this, there are still some doubters as there always will be. So, where do you stand on this topic? Is climate change/global warming real? Or simply a hoax? Or just a cycle that our planet is currently going through? Vote and discuss!
It's hard to believe. Our oceans are so vast. I've been out in the Pacific 150-200 miles west of Baja California numerous times. You just can't believe how "used" our oceans are by ships, etc. While most is pretty clean and pristine, there are times where you come across huge floating areas of trash and other evidence of human activity. It's sad people continue to use the oceans as a dumping ground: freighters, large fish processing ships, and yes, cruise ships. Many times we've cut across the wake of one of those huge floating hotels and there is fresh debris following them. Not as bad as it used to be, but still occurs. Troubling. But is it changing our climate? The Geological Record says it is "always" changing. But are we pushing it along, accelerating the change? There is an old saying, "all storms begin with a gentle breeze." Only time will tell. In the meanwhile be good to your neighbors and neighborhood. Cheers!

Randy,
Do you really think for a minute im going to take your word over a Climate physicist?? And a Ocean physicist, That specializes in monitoring reefs??
PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO AGAIN RANDY. I QUOTE: "THE LEVEL HAS DROPPED IN THE BARRIER REEF OVER THE LAST 5000 YEARS"!!! So "IF" the water level rises we will GET MORE CORALS...........
3.33 of one degree warming in 30 years! Give me a break!

Yes I will take Professor Peter Ridd's analysis over a government report/data any day of the week. Very much so when I know the people they have hired to get produce this information are global warming theorists.......

Global warming is indeed a religion to some. To say a bleached reef is a sign of global warming is like saying most criminals like candy therefore candy causes crime. If all you look at is the limited data shown in the talking point you will never get to the truth. Governmental opposition funding needs to be on par with the rest of the funding.

Of course you should take my word over everyone. You'd be far better off and far more likely to be correct that you are now. lol

Your statement was presented as evidence that sea levels are not currently rising. Of course they are, and I showed the data. Not my idea. The Australian government monitoring stations. For you to dispute claims of modern sea level rise by citing back to times 5,000 years ago is clearly an intentional denial of modern events. It may well explain why there are dead corals from 5,000 years ago in Australia, but it does not dispute that sea levels are rising both at the Barrier reef and worldwide. Will that hurt corals? I have no idea.

"Also the oceans level has dropped in the Barrier reef area. It has not risen as some say."
