I was actually wondering what a Walt Disney looks like in your system, Shane. Is this one?

1 ml per day?? Why such a small dose, I'm freaking out haha I do 0.5 ml a day on my 20 gallon nano.
I think it builds up very fast and can Burn the Tenuis so we just do a very very small amount just to keep using it

He keeps them high as a kite. like 15-30 nitrate and .08-.2 phosphate, shooting for 0.15. Has to be the most shocking part of this thread haha.
He is far from alone among the tenuis keepers I often see around here. I'd suggest that heavy in / heavy out is likely the most popular nutrient methodology these days, and ULN -- which used to be what the cool kids did -- has waned in popularity.

Sounds interesting

I'm still simply trying to keep acros alive in a Red Sea Max nano mixed reef. No idea what I'm doing wrong. Alk is stable and tested daily, dosing with 2 DOS, weekly 15% water changes, temp and PH probs calibrated accurately. Stats are 10.6 Alk, 440 Calc, 1400 Mag, 15 Nitrate, 0.1 Phosphate, PH 7.8-8.3 (Range is since I just started opening my windows again post summer so now 8-8.3). All other SPS in my tank absolutely thrive and grow so fast I'm constantly throwing out chunks since my tank is so small but acros just slowly die. I use "Just the Basics RODI water" from CVS for water changes since can't justify an RODI unit for 3.5 gallon water changes once a week. At a loss at this point. And running a Radion XR-15 Blue at 35%.

It sounds like you're doing everything right. How old is your system and how old is the rock?

The rock was bought live from my LFS and then tank was set up April 2020. It's covered in coraline algae. Everything else is thriving, including other SPS, but acros just slowly die.

Very strange. I don't have an answer, so I defer to people who are more adept than me. Maybe it's a lack of flow? I wish you the best because your setup sounds great.

Only thing missing could be a lack of flow.

I would start with finding a par meter and an icp test. 35% on a xr 15 sounds really low. That’s around 30watts. I have an AI prime 16 at 50watts over a 12” cube frag tank and it only gets 200 par on the bottom half of the tank.

I've thought about that but I don't own a par meter : ( . And it's a tiny mixed reef so I didn't want to burn anything. Going to get the ICP test though in case it's something random I've missed.

PH Discussion

I would like to have a discussion on PH in this thread so please share all you comments and suggestions and info about your PH so we can all try and learn something. There is a lot of great SPS reefers on R2R and I would love to learn from you and hear about your PH methods.

I will go 1st.

Currently my PH is running between 8.1 and 8.54.

I thought this was naturally very high so I recalibrated my Neptune PH meter and it was actually correct. I know it is correct because I stuck the probe Directly into the 7 and 10 Calibration solution and it was reading very accurate.

I live in a city so figured my ph would be low. My house was built in 1870 so I have been told the insulation is very low so this helps. I also dose heavy ESV Ionic 2 part solution. Currently i am dosing 170ML per day Alk. I don't use any other methods to increase PH.

Recently i got a CO2 Scrubber and Hooked it up just to see what would happen.

co2.jpg

I wanted to see if I could make the corals look better. I have been told that many people use a co2 scrubber and within days they see new shoots of growth on corals. Anyway i hooked up and started to see some RTN signs within 48 hours. I think I may have started to see new shoots though. A few days ago i started feeding heavier using Oyster feast. So at the same time I hooked up the co2 scrubber my po4 also went from .06-.19. So the RTN most likely was from the higher po4. Anyway I took the scrubber off line and stopped feeding the oyster feast. My po4 now is slowly dropping and is now .15.. once my po4 drops back down to normal levels i will hook up the scrubber again to see what happens. I guess we are constantly testing things trying to make things better :)

Another experiment I want to try once the po4 comes down is hooking up the co2 Scrubber only at night to try and balance out the pH going from 8.1-8.55 is a big daily swing.. so i think if i hook up the scrubber only at night it will balance this out..

Please share your PH stories and what you do to increase it or decrease it..... and how this has helped your growth.

thank you all for reading and participating in this thread :)

Plandauesq

I don't use any UV sterilizer and I hope this answers your question :)
my house has spray foam insulation so its very tight.. so my ph was low for a long time like 7.6-7.9 always. i added a co2 scrubber and its now 7.8-8.2. but i spend alot on media because its last about 2 weeks and starts to drop. so i have my alert set on 7.70. then i change it i did add kalk for awhile to bring up but that was a pain and just a bandage... also had my cal up aroud 500. so no good.
