So I’m in the heavy equipment mechanics field and I’ve been doing field work for the last 10 or so years. In march I formed my own business doing heavy equipment repair. I’ve been doing both since then until yesterday. My former boss asked me what’s been going on with me why my attitude has changed and why I seem miserable on the daily. It then clicked that I was miserable and I told him I was done that I needed to move on. Now to focus on my own business and see what happens

anyone else ever do something like that?

No, never been in a situation like that, but I wish you all the luck! It's a great thing to be able to work for yourself!

I passed on my first fulltime job, told them I was leaving to go fishing...when they were assigning projects through the fall they assumed I was going to continue working. I told them I wasn't going to be around...some were shocked...some were not. I had other winter employment options closer to my family.

It was a seasonal fisheries job in Arizona, I could only work 9 months unless I applied for a full time position. No one really directed me either way, I was at one meeting where they said the budget was going to be tight in a year or two. I was right to leave, my job among others were absorbed in other regions and the Phoenix office where we worked was shuttered.

I enjoyed the work just didn't like living in a hot city.

I thoroughly enjoy the work I do. Out and about all day long on different construction sites meeting ppl from all walks of life. What I didn’t enjoy about my former employer was the lack of respect management had for the guys like myself that actually took pride in what they did. I was essentially the “clean up” guy. Our shop guys wouldn’t fix the equipment in the shop before it would go to a job site so when it arrived broken or leaking or whatever the case was I was always the one to go fix it and deal with the customer. If they couldn’t diagnose a issue I was the one to have to go help out. But when it came to ppl getting praise and raises I was always the one over looked. A simple recognition of a good job from a boss tends to go a long way with ppl especially me. I got to the point I didn’t even want to go to work anymore because I knew how the day would go

I’m praying my adventure into being self employed will allow me more time with my family and pay off in the long run.

I’m the type of person that believes you get out of something what you put into it and when I do anything I go all in on it. I don’t want to become a millionaire or have a million dollar business I just want to be able to live and enjoy the things I have now. I definitely have no desire to grow to the level of having multiple employees

Hi there! I was working as kitchen expediter for a steak and seafood restaurant. I was in charge of every dish that went out, and making sure that they went out in a timely manner. It was a very high stress type of job and the waiters would constantly curse at me and focus on all the tiny mistakes. It started to feel like I was selling my soul for a job I didn't love. I have never felt more free in my life than the day that I quit that job. Sometimes it's just not worth the stress, life is too short. I now am very happy working at frag farm coral which is a shop in Staten Island, NY that sells fish, coral and all the needs for the reefing hobby. My cousin, Frank, just opened the shop and it's a much more peaceful and enjoyable job. If you'd like, email us at [email protected] for a discount code to our website which is fragfarmcoral.com. Here's to better jobs and sweet freedom!! Good Luck and God Bless.

You sound a lot like my husband! Mechanical, handy, problem solver. Never had problems getting a job, but getting paid appropriately, especially as he got older with few credentials...then he got cancer and he was laid off while getting chemo. He recovered and went to work for a friend in marine construction. Plenty of crap equipment to fix onsite.

I had an opportunity to buy a business and put him to work for me. Sewing machine sales and repair. Still machines, but smaller lol. And working on them in ac/heat. It was a big leap of faith and we had nothing to fall back on, but we both know how to work hard!

Best wishes for your new business and make sure to live life beyond work! My boss has made a toxic work environment....I'm self employed. We took up reefing when we realized we had little to talk about besides kids and work.
