Knocked off hammer head

only been in the hobby for a few months so still kind of a noob. but just had a thought. i've been reading a bunch in the thread about 3d printing. I'm wondering if it would be possible to 3d print a replacement skeleton to have it sit in while it tries to grow a new one. But then i thought....if thats possible...why not put it back into it's existing skeleton? is that not possible to super glue it in there like youwould a normal frag and then it could just grow from there?

I don’t think superglue would hold to the bissle thread mess that was on the bottom of this puppy when it came off. It was a slimy mess. Recently I haven’t seen the insides/ underside since it inflates into a sphere shape now. Although, that idea could be a potential option for when there’s some skeleton there to glue. I’ve never had luck with gluing coral directly to something. It’s always been skeleton or plug pieces that were glued to rock or a plug. The only attempts at that I made gluing the coral itself have been with zoas if they fell off a plug. For me they either end up as a huge sealed glue ball stuck to my finger or pop right back off after a day or so.
With my luck if I tried before there was skeleton I would find a way to glue the mouths shut and that would be the end of this little adventure for me.

Here are a couple I just took. I need to clean it’s house out. I have hair algae in the sump where I got the rock to weigh down the container so there’s algae growing on the mesh and on that rock.

My bi colored blend destroyed mine, left only one small polyp. It popped off while I was at work. Never found it but my girls said the fish were playing catch with it, lol. If I’d come across this thread when it happened I would have done the same. I’ll be following to see if the hammer does start to grow back a base.

Week 3. Gave its house a cleaning last night. It’s still floating around in there. When we were cleaning the container I wanted to try and poke around for a skeleton but my wife, rightly so, told me to keep my darn hands off of it. So my curiosity is unchecked.

That's awesome. Gives me hope for one of my acan heads. One of the polyps bailed out but it's still attached to the other head next to it. It's just flapping in the current

Please keep updating this. I would love to see the outcome. Leave the emptied skeleton in the tank as well. They often sprout new heads some time after.

I had the skeleton in there but it got covered in that furry algae that only seems to grow on dead skeletons so I tossed it. My hope now is the polyp building more skeleton.

According to my weekly testing my alk is finally starting to drop again which is either a good sign that things are growing again or I’m getting teased by the coralline. I’m hoping for the former not the latter. Not time to restart dosing yet but still an improvement. I try and run the alk at 9.5 it was as high as 11.5 and has only been dropping with the water changes ever other week. This week it went from 10.25 to ~10 so another week or so and I’ll start up the kalk.

Pretty crazy that this is still kicking- and looking quite healthy besides not having a skeleton. Usually people will say polyp bail out = no recovery. The end result of this will be very interesting. I hope you keep updating this!

I’m thinking it was because I did it somehow by touching the skeleton trying to reset it into place. It was also perfectly happy/ healthy when this happened. Most other times bailout occurs are because of chemistry, lighting, or fish abuse and they don’t get caught immediately after they let loose. Hopefully it makes a recovery rather thank just teasing me for a few months then dying anyway.

Week 4. Still hanging out in the basket. Inflating well and still getting quite large.
It’s about the size of a golf ball.
my alk came back down to an acceptable level and it’s dropping 3 ppm per day so I’ve restarted kalk dosing. Here’s hoping it’s skeletal / coral growth not just coralline algae.

Please pay no attention to the amazing turf algae that grows only on my sand. Water change day is tomorrow so that’ll be remove during the change.
