We all hope our corals will grow and thrive, but then what when they thrive “too much”?

I frag mainly for the purpose of sales. Due to having my shop, I rely on bringing in colonies and chopping them up quite heavily. I then often keep parts of the colony for myself/future use.
But I have also found myself fragging corals to try in new or reset systems, including Acans, Gonis, Acros.

I like to see them grow out to the point that they start shadding themselves. A tank full of frags and nothing grown out looks like someone dumped a bag of Skittles in there tank.

I can say I have never fragged a coral before, but I would love to try my hand at it whenever I start growing some

I've just started fragging corals again, mostly to make space in the aquarium for new things when existing corals go crazy. And since waste is criminal, I usually attempt to put them on plugs and trade them in for store credit.

It's been years since I last had to frag, but I've had to do it three times this year so far. Trying to get some more desirable corals in the tank and growing so that it's more worthwhile. Eventually I'd like to have enough production to where I feel like I can actually try my hand at selling and shipping.

If I'm being honest for a second I would love to run a coral farm and turn that into at least a dependable side hustle, but I'm nowhere near that in terms of both skill and volume and the local scene here isn't really conducive to small growers... so for now I'm just focused on making my tanks the best they can be and getting them to the point where I am regularly producing viable and desirable frags.

I am between Lansing and Grand Rapids. Not many shows around me 😭
Ann Arbor is in a couple weeks, Big Lansing show in February. I drove 9 hours to RAP in New Jersey and didn’t even get any coral. Lol!

I frag all the time - SPS, LPS, softies, zoas, anemones, etc. I would populate backup of expensive corals, just in case. I also share corals with family & friends. If/when I'm lucky to sell some, I'll use the proceeds to buy more/different corals I don't have. Therefore, I prefer trading vs selling, tbh.

I frag for 2 reasons -
1) to keep a backup of my coral just in case something drastic happens in my display
2) to fund my hobby :-)

But prefer to keep everything grown out in my display, so most fragging is done by my fish!

SPS, LPS, softies... I've fragged a few. Mostly done like a gardener, to keep things in check. Sometimes with the glass scraper :O) I have some that need more fragging currently. My utter chaos zoas are growing like dandelions. Overgrowth is a real problem.
