Well its been a while since an update and today my tank turns 1 year old.
Its been the typical journey so far. Ugly stages, fish deaths, cyano and now I am dealing with dino's.
with my 225 I was dealing with Oestropsis which I was able to tackle pretty quickly with a 90w UV. Now in this system I have Coolia and a little bit of LCA. Man these dino's are stubborn. I have the UV plumbed into my display and pulling water into a 80w and 90w UV with a Varios 10 and still cant get ahead of them. I have another 120w UV which will be here tomorrow and hopefully I can tackle these. Big tanks, big problems, big $$. I can say for the most part its just visual and not really hurting any corals. Although I do believe it has caused a couple fish deaths along the way. The most notably my Emperor Angel which I had when I started my 225 about 4 years ago. So the goal is to defeat the Coolia with UV then the LCA with silicate dosing.
Here is a current FTS and some other shots
Sorry for the glares, a lot of light in this room.
So other than the dino's the system is doing well. Corals are starting to grow. Alkalinity consumption is about 200ml per day between Sodium Hydroxide and Soda Ash. Once the PH hits 8.45 it switches to Soda Ash. CA about 200-235. PH is 8.2-8.45 daily and I also use a CO2 scrubber.
ORP hovers around 250-300 daily although it tops out at 350 when the Ozone is on at night (Ozone generator shuts off at 350).
As far as other supplements I am running Captiv8 Elements. This is much like Moonshiners but more cost effective for larger systems like mine. It has been a bit of a challenge to dial it in since I am battling DIno's and with that using Rox Carbon which strips out elements. Overall though I am really pleased with the system.
The nice thing about the Captiv8 elements is the fact that I can mix them all together into 1 dosing container except for the strontium which is super helpful.
At the moment I have 13 Angelfish in my reef with a plan to get about 5 or more hopefully in the next few weeks. The French Angel is definitely the boss of the tank. All of my fish have come from
@Dr. Reef except for the fish from my previous system. All the fish have come in healthy and eating. I did have a couple shipping issues and they took care of all issues right away. I highly recommend them!
95% of my corals came from a friends system which has been setup 4+ years and has massive colonies. I took frags from my old system plus frags from his system to populate this tank. Almost all of them were multi branch frags or small colonies. Polyp extension is not the best, I do have a reef full of angels and they do pick but do not decimate any of the corals in the system. However I am really limited on what I can have. I do love Chalices but they are a no go in this tank. It becomes a buffet when I put them in. That being said I do have a 40 gallon sump with no angels where I can place these corals in.
So overall a lot of ups and downs the first year to be as expected. Besides the dealing with dino's the biggest problem I had for the first 9 months or so was dealing with burnt tips on my acros which would just cause the fish to eat the stressed corals and downhill to death they went. The last 3 months though have not had any burnt tips and the corals are coloring up nice and growing and can withstand the occasional nip. I strongly believe a healthy coral can survive with most angels. A stressed coral cannot. I did have elevated Aluminum and Tin on an ICP test and I ran Cuprisorb and Metasorb to get them down and that was the turning point. Can't say for certain it was the cause but things are better now that my aluminum and tin levels are low.
