Do you want rigid or flexible plumbing? There are so many options we need more info on what you're looking to accomplish.

Well, schd 80 does not play nice with Schd 40, so it is going to cost more...

You could do black vinyl lines, and hose barbs. That would be very easy.

I marked out what a 40g tank that is 36x15x15 would be.

I marked the inside stud to show height.

This picture shows the electrical on the right side, the two arrows show where the bulkheads are on the tank above.

IMHO, if you can afford it, use flexible PVC to plumb your tank. You can get it at home depot. What is the setup of your sump? Baffles? You want your 1.5" return line to run to the left side of your sump. I would suggest you use a filter sock to keep the bubbles down. Water should flow through the sump to the right side where your return pump should be placed. Use a length of flexible PVC from the pump to the 1" bulkhead. You should have a union in this line for maintenance on the pump. From the bulkhead inside the return you should have a length of rigid PVC to the top of the overflow, then a 90 and another piece of PVC to get the water outside the overflow. There are many, many options. You might also check out www.melevsreef.com to take a look at sumps and their operation. Good luck.

Oh, and the reasoning on the flex.....the more elbows (90's and 45's) you have in your plumbing, the more head loss you get. With flex you can make gentle transitions and therefore, less loss (more flow).

Not sure why sch 80 doesn't work with 40. I have used the combo many times without issue that I recall. I always use rain or shine blue glue though. Maybe this helps somehow? Posiedon what issue may arise?

I figure I can order some flexible pvc to make it easier on me.

I am guessing 1.5" pvc for overflow to sump as well as 1.5" unions, 1.5" ball valves.

then 1" from eheim to 1" gate, 1" ball valve to 1" bulkhead and then 1" to 3/4 adapter for locline to return to tank.

Could I use 1.25 for the overflow to sump instead of 1.5?

I would not put a valve on the overflow, just on the return. Other then that, it is great. Get the PVC "cleaner" instead of the purple primer, it will make a cleaner install, and is much less hazardous to your health. :D (If you spill any of the purple stuff, your wife/girlfriend will KILL YOU!)

Looking good! It doesn't look like you need to much flexible piping, but I like to order my items from www.Savko.com. They are in Ohio I believe and the goods get here just about the next day or two.

I also use schedule 80 bulkheads that are threaded and use the connectors you show in your picture that take it to a slip and then use flexible or pvc pipe.

You might also want to invest in a nice ball valve for your return. The ones you get at the local hardware stores can lock up pretty good, so I like the ones from Savko as they seem to open and close better without a struggle.
