Hey all,

Long time lurker but new member. I’m Kyle and I’m from North Texas. I’m currently learning all I can before jumping in on my first tank, looking forward to being a part of the community!

My plan is to get somewhere between a 60-100 gallon setup (total including sump) - any recommendations on must have equipment would be great!

Hello and welcome! The basics for a sump system include the tank, live or dry rock, sand (if desired), sump, return pump, wavemaker, heater (or chiller in hot household), lights, and a protein skimmer. As far as which manufacturers, your budget will dictate that. But don’t be shy about buying used, there are a lot of choices in the marketplaces right now! Good luck!

My biggest holdup right now is picking tank size. We picked up a lightly used Biocube 32 a few weeks back and quickly decided we are just going to want to go bigger so decided to resell that one and just set up a larger one from the start. Don’t want something too big where maintenance is overwhelming for a beginner but also don’t want to be limited by size.

Definitely leaning towards a newer used tank unless I just happen to find a good deal on a new tank!

First of all, Welcome to R2R. It's good to have you here.

Be cautions with used tanks. My first larger tank was a 75g I bought used. It had been sitting dry. And that came to bite me in the behind as it leaked at about the 6 month mark. Had to do an emergency upgrade to a 90g on the fly, with a tank full of livestock. That was NO fun. By the time I had that 90g up and running I'd replaced everything from the original set up with better equipment with the exception of the return pump. What I learned from that fiasco was to buy a tank new and get a proven brand. Also, put thought into equipment to buy and get the best I can afford. There is nothing wrong with saving up to get what you really want.
