I just installed this Reef Octopus Regal 200SSS on my new aquarium. Not much bio load yet. Tank is 150G and I have 5 anthias and 1 goby. I do feed a lot though but nitrates are still under 10. I do have a roller mat in front of the skimmer so that is one reason. I have the pump on the lowest setting and the gate valve is opened all the way and the skimmer is still overflowing. I have removed the plug so the skimmer cup doesn't fill up. Does this just need to break in? Thanks.

Yes, plus with the low bio load it will likely do that. My Nyos did that when I first got my tank up and running.
