7.5 gallon with 1 gallon fuge over 8 months old. About 20 lbs live rock. Bare bottom .
Tank inhabitants include 1 O. clownfish 2 acan colonies (about 10 heads) two hammer frags (2 heads) assorted zoas.

I plumbed a filter loop using a power head and an inline water filter housing.
Allowed to Oatey primer/cement to cure overnight . ALL pvc plastic, nylon fittings and ABS plastic (filter housing) piped from power head up,over glass down to filter and back up to aquarium. When the pump runs alone in aquarium everything seems fine. When I connect loop hammers close pretty quick.
Moved output flow around to see if it was irritating them with no change. Any ideas?

Sometimes they need a few days if disturbed.

What filter?
You say inline filter so I have to assume your talking about a inline carbon filter like that used with a refrigerator.
These are just cheap carbon blocks.
Need more detailed information.

It’s just the housing. I put filter floss , prefilter that was in previous filter and rinsed ROX carbon

My best guess is that the change in flow rate and direction isn't to their liking. Move them, change the direction of flow. I would think that would take care of it for you.

I moved it a couple times and the flow rate doesn’t seem to bother them when it’s just the powerhead running without the loop, this is why I posted I’m stumped

Yea confused.
First off what is the issue and
secondly when is the issue.
Your original post said when the loop and filter were installed and ran the corals close.
This last post when its removed?

Sorry if I’m not being clear enough just trying to answer questions as they come .
The problem is when I connect my new filter loop my hammer corals retract
So I tried a few things to narrow down the problem... I thought maybe it was the pump shorting so I tried :
new pump+ Old loop=coral closed
Then thought maybe even over night the glue hasnt cured
So i tried: Old pump without loop= coral open
Then : Old pump + loop+different locations
= coral closed

That is strange.

A glue contamination issue would have long term effects that would not dissipate.
So It could be the glue but, I would raise an eyebrow on that theory.

I would think that maybe the clear tube portion of the filter canister could be leaching something. Yes the canister is rated for water, but is it rated for Saltwater?

Good point . I’ll replace that section with a pvc tube and see if that is the problem. Also wondering if the added resistance from the vertical lift needed to push water back into tank is causing the pump vibrate at a frequency they don’t like.

Hey you never know.
I have often wondered about the cause of noise in the water (Vibration) and its potential effects.

UPDATE..I changed to an external DC pump With slightly different plumbing configuration using most of the old pipe and the same filter housing/media as original setup. Only real difference is the pump. Instead of the internal jbj 2500 powerhead driving filter I am now using a hygger Dc external pump to drive it. Using suction side of pump to draw water up over the side down to the pump, through the filter and back to refugium and to display tank. Inhabitants seem to love it.
Working like a champ, will post pics of operation tonight. Conclusion; JBJ PUMPS produce a **** ton of vibration AND heat. Avoid if at all possible
