First of all, what's everyone's experience with these fish?
I've read that they hide in caves and aren't out swimming around.
Second what's another fish with the color of a royal gramma?

My gramma is great. It’ll swim around and be seen during the day. They will stake out a territory and keep other fish away. They need a cave or rock overhang to sleep in. They’re a great addition to a reef tank.

I do love their colors. One of the reasons why I fell in love with saltwater fish is the colors can't be beat!

Mine is out most of the time. Swimming in the front of the tank. Yes it will hide in the rock work sometimes and occasionally will spit sand (almost daily with mine).

I had mine for about 2 years and it’s always out and about but when I first put him in it was a little shy for about 3 weeks. As far for similar colors the only other fish I can think of is a Bicolor Dottyback, neon Dottyback and if you have room a purple tang.

I have two of them. Really like them a lot. They are both Biota captive bred, got them both within the last year, a couple months apart. I do wish they would come out more often but they do spend a fair amount of time in the open. They are often at opposite ends of the aquarium but have never been aggressive toward each other and spend a lot of time together as well.
