In the salfert ALK test kit i have a slight question. When i draw the liquid (KH) that i'm supposed to drip into my test tube is the KH liquid supposed to be right against the black "piston"? It is very vague if it is or not. Because when i draw the solution into the syringe it is not.

no its not supposed to be right against the piston. The liquid that "should" be there is in the attached tip. Without the tip, that blank area won't be there.

the only concern is that the amount of fluid drawn up is to the level indicated on the syringe barrel

No its not, you need air to compensate for the tip. Just the bottom of the black stopper should go to the 1mL mark. This is also true when drawing water from the tank in the 5ml syringe and the 2ml syringe(for Mg and Ca) So shake out the water in the tip between tests or it will be slightly askew. I also shake out the yellow tips and the 1mL syringe tips between use so there is minimal residue for next time.

Should be an air pocket between the piston and the fluid. There is compensation in the test for this. I made a mark at the point where the average amount of fluid fills the syringe. That way if it's very different from that mark i refill it. I get a good result from this.

+2 for you lol, I just re read the instructions and you are correct, after giving my dog insulin shots for 2 yrs the thought of air in a syringe is ingrained in my brain
