Hi Guys! I'm in the process of building a new tank. I moved to a new apartment a few months back and one of the things I wanted was a bigger tank. Finally after buying all the apartment stuff I have started to buy new tank equipment. I wanted to build a bigger cube but now that I have my living room set like I want, I don't have space for a bigger cube. So my current tank is 17.5" x 17.5" footprint and the chiller is in the back. The tank is around 11" apart from the wall and I still have some room in the front that I could use without looking weird. A 40 breeder is 18" wide so is no big change and if I set it "peninsula" style I can use that lost space. I've never though of a 40 breeder to be use in this layout but that's what works for me right now. After all the short side will be facing were you stand now in front of my current tank so it will feel like looking the same but is long from the sides which is good cause at one side I have my loveseat and the other is open to the hall.

I started buying some stuff. Will use some equipment from the current tank. Enough talking lets go to the interesting part.

  • Equipment:
    AGA 40breeder tank
    DIY wooden stand (laminated)
    DIY Acrylic sump
Super Reef Octopus XP1000 SSS Skimmer (already have)
    Vortech MP10 (already have)
    Biopellets reactor (already have)
    Water blaster pump 3000 (700GPH)
JBJ Nano Arctica chiller (already have)
36 LED lamp (upgrade from current)

  • Livestock:
Mainly SPS. Will transfer everything from my tank, add more rock and obviously continue to fill up
    Zoas
    Acans
Some frogspawn, torch or hammer here and there

Some diagrams of the proposed layout:

Here's the current aquarium:

In these drawings the door is removed. It will be a whole removable piece, not small doors. As you can see, the chiller is inside the stand since I can't afford to have more equipment out of that footprint. The stand has a false wall to separate and isolate heat produce by the chiller to affect the water. The short side that faces the wall will be open for ventilation and the hole you see in the back faces the side of the couch (it still leaves enough space for good ventilation) Will use some fans as well to remove air from the stand. The sump has 3 gallon water reservoir for ATO. What I still haven't figured out is how to hang the lamp. I bought a 24" heatsink that weight a ton. Don't know if a single EMT bent tube will hold from the back. I'd like to have a clean top so mounting legs will be the last option.

Comments, suggestions and thoughts are always welcome and very appreciated

I drilled and tapped 6 screws to the heatsink which holds the acrylic cover in place. Also drilled 4 holes for the hanging kit to the sides.

Check out the spot in the roof. It isn't actually a tight beam... My iphone just doesn't like LEDs

This looks like it's going to be a great build. Could you give a little background on the Typhon? These arduino projects are really grabbing my attention lately. :)

Thanks cparka, the typhon was designed and built for me from a fellow reefer. Don't know much about it but I can tell you it is an arduino clone, has 4 individual channels. Each channel can be programed to turn on/off at specific time (it has a built in RTC) You can go set the maximum you want each channel to raise and how long you want to make the ramp from 0% to Max set. Has some functions as a manual override were you can chose between timer, all on, all off & % (for both channels at the same time) That's pretty much all I know.

Nice setup! Do you have a fish list yet?
Where are you located? And If you aren't using the older tank and you're close enough I'd buy it from you.

very nice - you old cube is really cool and i really like your LED build
why did you decide to go with triplets instead of just even spacing, and have you done any PAR testing on it

Just bored of the same... Also liked the AI's design which uses 3 LED pucks so I wanted to replicate something like them. I haven't done any PAR readings yet. I have a friend with a Quatum meter and I hope to invite him to take some readings of this baby

Temps in PR are hot. Currently we're having 90~92F almost all day long. Maybe at night it drops to mid 80's

i would really like to see the numbers on a build like this - really curious about the spread and the difference between directly under a triplet and between them

Sure, no problem. I just hope I can get those readings cause he's the only person I know that has a PAR meter. I don't feel like to fork $300 for just see what my lamp shoots :xd:

Anyway, I can't wait to set up my new tank! but I'll have to wait till July cause I'm going on a summer college exchange for a whole month.

O another note, I sold the old fixture from my cube and I currently have the new one from the 40b. Lamp was hung 14" above water level and power was Blues 50% Whites 40% Enough to say I already bleached 1 montipora and a tri-color valida :( had to lower the power even more. As is, I love the color blending, the spectrum and the power this lamp pushes. The coverage will be excellent on my 40b cause my current tank is literally half the 40 breeder. The footprint is 17.5" x 17.5" and 16" high. Only thing I don't like is that the two moonlights still too strong to be used as moonlights. Anyway will use them at least 2 hours after light cycle just to have an extra viewing time in Blue :)

Sorry for the lack of updates. I was in Mexico for a summer class exchange. Came back to work on the stand and everything. Here some pictures of the work so far:
d67a48ae.jpg

Then painted:

Then I laminated the inside of the side walls, screw them to the frame, then laminate the outside so the screws are not visible (still not completely done on this pics)

It has a top off shelf inside

and I found some nice sliding tracks for the doors.
Forogot to say I'm not going to set up this tank as a peninsula tank. Found a space in the living room were I can put it against a wall so its better for me and the chiller can be out of the stand. That means the sump can be larger!

Currently I finished the stand, now working on the sump baffles and building the ATO reservoir. More pics coming later tonight after work ;)
