Hello fellow reefers on the other side of the globe! im Tung Nguyen, and I live in Vietnam.
I’ve been a silent reader on this forum for quite a while and have learned so much from you all. Because of work, I had to travel a lot and ended up putting this hobby on hold for the past two years. Before that, I had a small tank measuring 20x16x15”.
Now that my job has become more stable, so i plan to set up a new tank in my office ,where I currently spend most of my time.

My plan is to build a shallow tank, but one that still gives a sense of depth when viewed from the front. So the best option is a shallow tank with a square layout.
After giving it a lot of thought, I finally decided on a size of 40x40x18”, which is about 105 gallons — or 126 gallons including the sump.

For the tank stand, I’m using an aluminum profile frame. Wooden stands are cheaper and can easily handle the weight of a 105g tank, but there’s one thing I don’t like about them: the wooden legs are usually quite bulky, taking up a lot of space in the cabinet underneath. Plus, they don’t look very nice in my opinion.

The stand frame measures 40x40x43”. I know that’s a bit taller than most standard tank stands, but I wanted the tank to be right at eye level when I’m standing and looking at it.

I’m currently finishing up the plumbing. The plan is to run three drain lines down to the sump, and three return lines: one main return, plus two additional lines for the UV sterilizer and the chiller, both connected through the manifold.

This is the result so far, and I’m pretty happy with it. And guess what, all of this customs cost me less than $500! Crazy, right? I’ve looked at so many builds on this forum, and the amounts you guys spend honestly leave my jaw dropped 😵

I’ll keep updating as I move forward with this project. Let me know what you think. is there anything I should adjust or improve?
all the comment will be both a source of motivation and valuable knowledge for me. Thank you!

All of the parts were first sketched by hand, then ordered one by one from local shops. It was quite a bit of effort and took some time, but the upside is that I was able to get everything in the exact sizes I wanted.

Sorry, but I’m afraid there’s really no such thing as “budgeting tips” when you’re living in the US or Europe. I was only able to get these prices simply because I live in Asia, lol..especially in countries like Vietnam or China.

you are correct sir 😆 and maybe even quadruple if Trump is still president, hahaha… Anyway, as long as you can afford the cost of living where you are, and still have enough left over to enjoy this hobby. That’s already great i guess

We have no choice where we are born, lol.
I am retired and planned for it so I don't have to worry.
My daughter is only 24 and the cost of everything is unreal for a young person in California.
Fortunately I am in a position to help her when needed.

Get a build thread going brother so we can all follow.

You sound like a wonderful dad, and I’m really happy for your daughter. I’ll be a father myself in just a few months, and I hope that when I retire one day, I can also be a strong support for my child 😁.
Of course, I’ll keep updating as I move on to the next step.

Don't blink, your child will be 20 before you know it!
Congrats on your adventure, and...

Hello, it’s me again
Every Sunday, I set aside some time to gradually work on finishing this tank.

And this past Sunday’s task was to be a plumber, setting up the UV sterilizer :D

One thing I really like about the aluminum stand is that I can easily customize it to mount equipment neatly.
I added two extra aluminum bars to secure my UV light.
IMG_5849.jpeg

Speaking of UV lights, I know many people here tend to have a negative view of products that come from China.
But my perspective is a bit different. This UV unit is from a Chinese brand called Channing, which I bought from a well-trusted reefer in Vietnam — at a price far cheaper than major US brands like UltraViolet…
What really matters to me is that inside the “Made in China” housing, the UV bulb itself is made by Philips, a common type that I can easily find and replace later. Unlike some other UV brands, where the bulbs are proprietary and can only be replaced with the company’s own products, this makes things much more inconvenient. Ordering replacement parts from the US to Vietnam also both expensive and time-consuming.

From what I can see, the build quality of this product is actually quite good — especially for under $100 for the 36W model. As long as the outer casing and threaded joints don’t leak, I’d say it’s a real bargain.

Alright, moving on to the installation — as you can see in the picture, the UV is hooked up to the inlet via the manifold with a flow control valve. For this tank, getting a flow meter just feels like an unnecessary expense. Honestly, all I need is a bucket and my phone’s stopwatch.

And as you can see at the outlet, I added a drain valve with a reducer down to an 8mm tube. This little faucet is used to acclimate the water before I introduce any new livestock into the tank. I find it pretty convenient.

This weekend I’ll continue with updates on the rock layout and the control panel. Wishing everyone a productive and joyful week ahead! :D

A little update on the tank after 7 months: I started adding a few SPS about 3 months ago.

Mostly SPS frags along with a few soft corals. The parameters seem very stable overall, except that even with just this few pcs of corals, they’re consuming an absolutely insane amount of dKH every day, to the point where it just doesn’t make sense😳

A little update on my lagoon tank.

It seems like the inherent weakness of LED lighting is that most of the intensity stays focused on the upper surfaces, leaving a lot of shadowed areas underneath the corals. So I ended up adding two LED bars on both sides of the tank, angled at 45 degrees, to improve side coverage and reduce shadowing.

And of course, I also got myself a pair of blue light filtering glasses. Since I’m nearsighted, mine has a double-layer setup, prescription lenses on the inside and blue light filter lenses on the outside.

And finally… just let the corals do the talking 😎
