Isn't that a monkfish? Which I guess is technically an angler species

Love these. Maybe I will start a new tank so I can get one. How often do these lovable little guys need to be fed?

Is there any particular species of angler that is recommended for someone looking to keep them? From what i gather painted or warty seem to be best?

Yes the painted and the warty are the more common ones and the warty being the best for smaller tanks and keeping with other fish. You cant go wrong with the striated or sargassum either. The pygmy is best left alone. The giant(commerson) is also ok if you want something the size of a softball. The painted and giant do best alone. They all have the same care.

I wouldn't want an 8 or 9 inch giant angler. All your other fish would be on the menu
I was thinking of doing a species only tank for either a painted or warty with nps and lps with a separate tank plumbed in as a display refugium to try keep the nutrients down.

Its a project for down the line. I need to sort out the fish in my main tank first before i go buying anymore but im definitely putting alot of thought into it.

maybe breed mollies in the display fuge as a food source.

Hey, anyone here know exactly what species the "assorted angler" on Live Aquaria happens to be? In the pictures, all of the fish are painted frogs (with one potentially being a warty) and I would guess those would be the most likely candidates. I know they never sell Commerson's out of DD, and the sargassum & striated don't match the description given or the pictures. I know that the site says the max is 9" but I heavily doubt I would get a commerson's through it. I just want to know if I'm safe buying one for a lagoon 24g (2'x2'x16") that has been ripening for two years.
Thanks in advance! If anyone has directly ordered this fish then your input would be awesome.

It will be an antennarius species and really is a mixed bag of not so popular and mostly unattractive anglers. It could end up being a commersons, these are fish that they also couldn't 100% id. Take a look at the website below and you'll see why, small commersons and painted look very similar. These are usually brown, grey, dull and drab, off color muddy white, greenish. Now if you have a colorful reef they may color up, but for an angler I think it is best to find a wysiwyg like on dd, or just a staight up warty, sargassum, striated, or even one of the colored anglers, which will usually be a painted. Even if you get one of the colored ones or others that I mentioned without color in your tank for them imprint, they will imprint on the rocks color and become somewhat drab.

I don't know if this website has been posted here before:

Hey, thanks! Yes I am aware that I will be sent a slugger, actually the point of choosing that over WYSIWYG or colored is so I would have a chance at watching it change colors (The tank it will go in to is about to get a new shipment of sponges, red and pink). Currently WYSIWYS is also too expensive (so is getting a special LFS order) and to be honest it might be fun not knowing what I'll get lol
Also in regards to size, I know folks who would gladly take it if it got too large. Heck, if I really love it I would be down to repurposing my reef for it (in the case it is a Commerson's)!
Thanks for the speedy reply. I'll notify the thread with my decision!

I think it is a baby but I am not entirely sure.

As for getting them to eat frozen check out this thread.

https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/training-a-fish.190226/

Feeding video. The first minute and a half I am getting the shrimp so the inpatient can skip to 1:30 mark. At 2:03 you can see him grab one. He took down 3 shrimp so I pulled the rest out to prevent over eating. I guess I was expecting to much for him to ration his food.

I know this post is really old but is this a baby or a pygmy? I know this was asked by another member but I couldn't find a reply.

This is hands down the whackiest, craziest creature I have ever seen! There is no way something like this originated on this planet. This was whipped up by some alien in a test tube on some far away planet and seeded here millions of years ago!! Actually I'm pretty sure most of the original creatures on this planet ended up here the same way and everything we see today evolved from those first alien creatures! It just happens these guys still look like their original form from all those years ago. Haha.

I would definitely do a species tank with these guys. They are amazing!

That is a baby for sure, pygmies are insanely rare and are not often brightly colored. I would guess that is either Antennarius pictus or Antennarius coccineus.

Good call, that's an Antennarius pictus, you can see the 3 eye spots on his dorsal fin. That's how you can tell them from the commerson's when they are smaller.

Thanks for this! Now I can research these types in more detail. Not that I'm anywhere near ready to even think about keeping these guys it's never too early to start doing research. They are remarkable!

Also @lion king I decided to go ahead and bite the bullet. I purchased the fish just minutes ago, it should arrive next week at the latest! I am very excited to try another one of God's little monsters lol
I think you mean one of God's little aliens. They're not of this planet!! Haha.

Here is my buddy, Little Big Red. He is a pygmy red angler.

Very cute, tell us a bit about him. About the tank he is in, how long have you had him. What is is eating, how much and how often. These are notoriously difficult to care for long term.

I had him for 2 weeks now. I have him in a 7 gallon nano tank. I feed his SW ghost shrimp and also breeding SW mollies. According to the LFS, I got him from recommends feeding him at least once a week. So far he is doing very well.

What are you guys doing to get your anglers on frozen? I have a wartskin that seems like he couldn’t care less about the silversides I’ve offered him.
