Is it the Aquamaxx? I am running 24/7 and have been for a couple of weeks. I am trying to get it settled in. With mine I have determined that the vibration and very loud screaming sound is from the gray piece on the intake side that attaches the Venturi to the pump. This seems a very poor design on mine. I have taken it apart 3 times and thoroughly cleaned it and reassembled. I have to loosely fit that piece and not let it fit all the way flush with the connection and it has been working fine now. The thing is that any slight movement and I will be right back in the middle of the mess. I have been traveling this week but will be back this coming week. This will help me make up my mind whether I keep or return this. The only thing I like about it so far is the price and the size and that it does have a DC pump. I run it at 85%. I was trying to hold out for the new Red Sea DC setup. I feel thought that is too big for my 200G2 and that is why I went with this unit. I haven't gotten the skim dialed in yet because I have been waiting to see if the sound would settle down.
i would put in a support ticket and ask for a new venturi. sounds like the straight taper into the body may not be so straight and you could be getting some rattling against the body. if you want to see if it rattles, pull off the cup and airline from the venturi and just let it overflow while listening for rattling. if it's rattling against the body you should still hear it w/o the air draw. post a video too that may help with any further suggestions

Ok , so I have gone down the rabbit hole so many times my brain hurts. I have a 45 gal JBJ rimless AIO tank. Looking for advice on a skimmer that works best for that set up, tried and tested. But more importantly is it even needed with a tank that size?
I get a little confused with info overload, especially when I start reading some reviews on products. This isn't my first tank. I have had an EVO 13 gal for a few years and a biocube 14 before that. But never had to deal with a skimmer before. Any advice is surely welcomed at this point. I'm just wanting to keep it somewhat simple and easy to explain when I have to have someone check on my tanks when I travel.

wow, not much room between the sock trays, weirs and returns in there?

if you have more then 3.5 inch clearance behind the chamber then consider the aquamaxx bullet3 or the 1.5.

thanks

pump body looks fine and no cracks. the ceramic bearing shaft looks fine too. does the primary needle wheel look free from snails, pin bends or missing pins like in the attached pic below? Also does the secondary stationary pin insert on the volute look bent up or missing and pins? check to see if the stationary pin inserts have any play or are loose. if they are, they may contribute to some rattling. If all looks fine then re-assemble and run the pump (only) in a bucket of salt water unattached from the skimmer to see if you hear anything that sounds off. you will hear a lot of air draw if you dont connect the silencer and that may mask any other noises you are looking for so if you can keep that connected.

I don’t think its the pump anymore. When i run just the pump i can’t hear this particular noise. In fact if i put the skimmer body on without fastening the screws (so it just rests gently on the baseplate) then there is not this noise. On the other hand there is a lot less bubbles because a lot of water goes out between the body and baseplate. There is no silicone seal between the body and baseplate, its just acrylic on plastic so im at a bit of a loss as to what to do here

Hmm? If there's enough thread in the set screws that hold the body to the base plate you may be able to try some thin silicone sheeting and cut it like a gasket between the base and body. You would need to pad it under the pump too to raise the pump to the same level so the venturis would line up to the holes on each side of the body. May be worth a try and you wouldn't be cutting anything. Heres some thin material to consider.

Good idea but i don’t think it would work with the way the twisting screws are made on this skimmer. There is probably not enough space to add 1 mm of silicone

Extreme overflow with new skimmer. I have a reef octopus on my red sea reefer 350 g2, cycle is underway currently, sump water level is exactly within manufacturer parameters (8.5 inches approx), flow valve is fully open, but the bubbles are still causing water to overflow to rapidly to even seal the skimmer cup (I’d have to empty it every 30 seconds). Is this just a break in period? It’s been running for a few days now. Video below. Any tips?

bummer. i didn't realize these had that 1/2 turn butterfly screws. I would still try silicone. they make even thinner sheets down to 0.1mm. something to consider ;)
pricy on amazon but may be able to find elsewhere for cheaper

as long as the gate valve is wide open just let it run. common since there are production residues still present, even with deep cleanings. these residues play with the surface tension of the bubbles. how old is the system? your sump looks pretty clean;)

Just got my second LifeReef SVS2-24 Skimmer. Running it on a Simplicity 1000 at Speed 7 or 8. Had to elevate it a bit using a Reef Art Frag Stand. It’s working great, even though im still playing a bit with the speeds and gate valve. Also I just ordered another Simplicity 1000 Pump for my first Skimmer. It’s presently running on a Danner Supreme Pump, that’s going into its eighth year. BTW, Chewy has the 1000’s on sale.

Thanks - will just let it keep running as is then. I set up the tank about 3 weeks ago

I went with lifereef and am more than happy. Running a VS3-30 with Sicce Syncra ADV 7.0 on a 300 gallon peninsula. Set it and forget it.

Does anyone run a lifereef svs2-24 externally, I have a bashsea currently and used to have a skimmer section in my sump but filled it with other stuff. Namely my reactor pump and uv pump, so I would like to run it as I do the bashsea. Any problem with this?

should be no problem running a life reef externally. they are not subject to the matching gph throughput/height/depth that needle wheel skimmers have. they are old school countercurrent skimmers with mazzei style injectors. you can feed them from anywhere as long as you have enough pump and can get the effluent back into the sump with no restrictions.

Since a few days i am having this really strange popping noise from my skimmer.
I have tried dissembling and cleaning it and i have also tried cleaning the airline tubing with very hot water to dissolve any salt buildup. Neither made any difference.

anyone know what it might be? Right now im stumped as to what to try.
OMG. That's the exact sound my Reef Octopus Elite 200 does since day 1. Its been a year and I have not found a solution. I had contacted Coral Vue and they wanted me to send the pump in and pay 1 way shipping on a brand new skimmer and likely give me a remanufactured pump. BRS would not take it back so I learned to live with it. But when I do take the skimmer out to clean it becomes dead silent but then gets loud in a few days. I don't believe what we are hearing is the pump. I can run the pump underwater with no tubbing and it is silent. What I hear is the pump chopping all the air. I have tried bypassing the silencer and running it straight into my CO2 reactor and the sound continues. I can hear it coming from the skimmer. The impeller magnet does get like a nice coat of slime on it and when I clean that off the noise magically goes away but like I said it comes back. And the noise was present when the skimmer was first installed into service brand new. I must be cleaning something else or something isn't right with the skimmer venturi. My kids call my skimmer the popcorn maker.

The three skimmers i use in my rotation all have loud air draws which make the sound like you describe if not connected to a silencer or my CO2 reactor. My CO2 reactor has two stages which makes the air intake silent. I ran a single BRS chamber and it was still loud so i had an old RO/DO unit in the garage and decided to run 2 of the cannisters in line to the skimmer. The first chamber 1/2 full of water and the second chamber with the media. The water in the first chamber helps keeps the air moist into the media chamber and the added plus is that it knocks out the air draw noise.

mine is like this but i use a short chamber for the water

That skimmer should not be overflowing like that. Even while its "breaking in". Make sure the gate valve is fully open (counter clockwise) Make sure the gate valve is working by opening and closing and see if the level in the skimmer goes up and down. You don't have any medications or media or anything else in the water that could make that skimmer go nuts. Try dropping the water to 7' or even raising the skimmer itself. I know sometimes skimmers go crazy in the beginning but that just looks a little extreme.
