In terrestrial plants, when the leaves looks like this, the plant is lacking in iron.
Do more research and see what you should supplement your plant with.

I tried Seachem root tabs in my first few attempts. Mangrove died, but believe it was from salt shock and damaged roots. Currently I’m have great success with a Red Mangrove in a separate DT that will be connected when SG is 35. The mangrove is planted in organic potting soil capped with argonite gravel. This was 2 months ago, it is doing great now and almost at full salt water. Hopefully by Christmas it will be connected to the reef tank.

I've done the same. It's been almost 2 yrs. Between leaching and consuming from the soil. At some point we will have to furtilzer.

Awesome! I thought I was the first, but 2 years behind…lol! The root tabs had no ill effects on my corals and I believe they are ok. Comparing ingredients I thought Seachem was safer but only a guess.

I guess not. Sand than soil than sand. Has to be soil. Made a mistake of using potting mix first. Had stuff floating for weeks.

Yes, I soaked my soil for 2 day and scooped the floating stuff, so no floaters when capping. Happy so far….

Does anyone know if black or red mangroves are better at filtration? Does one grow faster than the other? I have 10 good size reds right now, and am considering adding another dozen red, or maybe mixing things up with some black.

I don't think they grow fast enough to be useful as nutrients uptake. For these, it is best to use macro algae. Since I am trying to clear the growth of the black mangrove so light can penetrate to the water surface, I removed several pounds of Black mangrove, these are years of growth, so not much in term of biomass removal due the long time it took to accumulate this mass.

I have been keeping, messing with, and experimenting with mangroves for years. I have read information far and wide, and utilized experience of other refers on here as well. I hope this becomes the one stop spot for inspiration and information. I hope that other mangrove aficionados join in with their displays and to honor us with their advice. I've been thinking about mangroves but have been putting it off as I didn't have room to set up a tank. But I like how you have used refugium spaces for mangroves. My 16" refugium is currently empty and I would like to use this space to start.

I believed "mangroves" are a place. Mangroves are the actual plant? Where can you buy them?

Also, I've noticed that some of the photos show the plants have grown above the light. Will mangroves survive with room light or must the setup be near a window?

They are a tree and need bright light. I use 2 noopsyche reef lights to grow with them.

I removed potting mix and used soil. The and helped keep the soil in place. The sand at the bottom stopped the soil from exiting.

Agree soil seems to be helping the mangroves to thrive. I'm hoping that the tabs in the soil will slow the release.

Agree. They don't grow fast enough to make a huge difference. They are super cool

We don’t see Red Mangroves here in Corpus Christi, but there plenty of Black Mangroves in the wild along the shoreline. Ranges of Black Mangroves have been extended North which causes significant changes in the shoreline ecology.

Could have been a lot of things. I'm sure 4 days in shipping didn't help. They've got all new leaves and are starting to send down prop roots. I supplement iron and foliar feed once a week. They're lit with a 360xe tuna sun.

Etsy. Several vendors have rooted black and red mangroves of varying size. Shipping is the killer for anything large.

I did the same and leaves dropped in the first month. Last 2 weeks all leaves now look healthy and green. I’m at about 27 SG hopefully 35 by December without noticeable changes.
