The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Hey Wrasse lovers. I’m looking for a Haliochoeres wrasse and was thinking chrysus. But… my LFS has a “Christmas wrasse” not sure the species. Are these two fish same in behaviors? My main concern is my invertebrate population namely Lysmata genus cleaners.

Your tank is looking 🔥

Of course. Wrasses are one of the very few fish to have passed the mirror/self-recognition test. They are probably the most inquisitive fish you can get. I could give you suggestions if you want a wrasse with a big personality?
My M. bipartitus is probably the smartest fish I’ve ever had. Definitely always looking at you to see what’s up.

Might be worth getting some pictures to verify ID since there are a few very different wrasses called Xmas wrasses. H. claudia would be a great wrasse. The other Xmas wrasses, maybe not.

Thanks, it’s been sitting for 3 or 4 weeks at LFS, in a bottom tank with poor lighting. If it’s still there when I go to buy my next fish I’ll try confirm the species if I do buy it, or if they have an H. chrysus that looks good I may prefer the yellow pop anyways.
Now that I look up H. claudia I think it is this one. Hard to say for certain from memory, but every other species I’ve looked up online for Christmas wrasse didn’t look like it until this one.

Consider this wrasse instead, Halichoeres iridis the Radiant wrasse. IMO, this is the most unique and unusual of the Halichoeres wrasses. My male and female are pictures below. They are every docile and does not bother any body. Completely reef safe and get to about 4 inches IME. They are poor shipper, but one establish they will eat anything, especially gore themself on pellets feeding via an automatic feeder. I did not have much problem with getting these wrasse get use to captivity.

I desperately want one of those. Nobody around me has them.

I suggest you keep your eye on Reef Beauties on-line. They occasionally bring them in and are reasonably priced. That is where I managed to finally acquire one.

I’d definitely snatch up a radiant if available.

Will I have problem if I add two male Pencil Wrasses together in my 320 gal tank?
I have a Male/Female Pseudojuloides splendens. I wanted to add a male Pseudojuloides severnsi to the mix (or another Pencil wrasse. Will this cause one of the males to loose color?
Also, what kind of life span do these wrasses have in our tanks?
TIA

It shouldn’t cause an issue of colouring down as long as they’re of different complexes, if you’re mixing males of one complex you’ll want the females as they will allow for the colour to stay (as the male is trying to dominate over a female rather than being dominated over by another male).

Life span wise, I’ve not kept one long enough to find out (currently my record is 1 year with my Kaleidos male) but I’d guess around 7-10 years as they do hunt for pests - I used to view them as planktivores when I first held them due to how quickly they’d feed on prepared foods.

I have not added a second yet, but planning to add a severnsi with my splendens. Mine is very chill except with very small fish (my juvenile royal flasher), so I think they will be ok.

what is the one on the left and does anyone have a full shot?
Male Anampses chrysocephalus on the left and a female Anampses femininus. The first is no longer in the hobby, the second will set you back a couple thousand and probably won't survive.
