The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Does anyone’s flasher flash like crazy at the time time every day? For me it’s my yellowfin and from 6-7pm. I’m assuming he can see his reflection at this hour due to the setting sun light coming in from a nearby window.

My sailfin does too. I think maybe it's to assert himself before bed.

Well my Brunneus Wrasse (had for 2 years) was lying on the bottom of the tank this AM breathing heavy and upside down, im 90% sure he is a goner, after loosing my rhomboid i wonder if I have some sort of parasite, its been a year since I did a praziquantel treatment despite feeding them Prazi and metro loaded food. What would the experts do, i don't love dosing Prazi into my DT.

Ug. Any other signs like swimming in powerheads? Hiding? You have tangs right?

No signs, in fact he sleeps in the corner and is the first fish up by 6:30, it was 8am and he was lying on the bottom breathing heavy and upside down. I was going to try to scoop him up and go into QT, but i didn't have a chance this AM.

That sucks! sorry. Was he eating well yesterday? Hows the purple tang? Any visable signs on him of anything?

Might have to agree with @OrionN about old age. I recently lost my P. Attenuatus that I had for about 2 yrs. Mine was either old age or he hit his head on the screen top. Just don't know how old they are when you get them.

But is curious as you just lost your Rhomboid as well.

Could of been old age, he did have a slight pus on his eye that was clearing up with Kanaplex loaded food, the rhomboid I think was spinal trauma, never found a body so hard to say. The tang is fine, I still think I want to catch him and sell him for more wrasse room

When you say you feed with medicine in food, how do you do that and is that 100% reef safe with SPS dominated and everything. Is there a link to a thread about this? (sorry dont mean to derail this thread)

Humble fish has an article somewhere, but you mix focus from seachem which is a binder with the medicine 1:1 and add that to food with vitamins and selcon. I like using freeze dried hikari brine the absorb the medicine “juice” well, I also add some roDi and freeze it. I break of chunks and feed it.

I will have to try to find this article, thank you!

I've read about this and it's happened to my Temminickii Fairy Wrasse. The other day I saw it doing the corkscrew dance due to a spinal injury. I can tell it got spooked and crashed into something because his nose looked beat up. It's been in the tank for a few weeks and I never saw aggression from any of the fish. I have him in an acclimation box so he wouldn't get tossed around by the current. I've heard they can sometimes come back from this type of injury but it's unlikely. I tried feeding him but he's not eating. I don't want to watch him slowly starve to death in the acclimation box so I'm thinking of euthanizing him. I know clove oil is used but how would I go about doing it... how much to use and will any clove oil work there's so many to choose from on Amazon.

Sorry to hear about your wrasse. It's a tough choice to euthanize, but once there is no hope of recovery, I feel it is the most selfless choice.

I've sadly also had to use the following procedure:
  1. Add a gallon of tank water to a bucket or tupperware (It will smell of cloves for a while, so don't use something you often need for your tank or food)
  2. Catch the fish and put him in the bucket
  3. Take a small container that can close, like the ones pills come in, and add a bit of tank water and 4 drop of clove oil. I get clove oil from the pharmacy, so not familiar with different brands.
  4. Close the container and shake vigorously to mix the oil with water.
  5. Now slowly add this oil water mix to the bucket the fish is in, while gently stirring with your hand without spooking the fish
  6. This is only an anesthetic dose, so after a few minutes the fish will fall asleep. You'll probably still see it breathing. If not asleep after say 5 min add a few more drops.
  7. Now you need to add the lethal dose. Take some of the same water the fish is in in to pill container, and add 12 drops and again shake vigorously.
  8. Now add this in with the fish, again stirring slowly
  9. This should be enough to stop breathing within half an hour, if not, add a bit more.
  10. If you don't see breathing for at least 10min, it is done.
Good luck:(
