I’ve never heard of a relationship between Magnesium and algae. Low magnesium can equal excessive algae? I know that Kent Tech M can get rid of briopsis, but I’ve read that it’s actually something else in the formula that kills it, not the actual magnesium.

Hello,

You are correct, there is something in it that gha doesn’t like. When my mag is 1400 roughly gha stays away but when it drops oh goodness. I’m hoping the Kent m works, it’s my first time.

Hello,

So lol I had to show the lfs person how to test mag because I assumed it was low do to alage. Well it was just about 1200, soo yeah I’m slowly raising that with the product by Kent called mag m gha does not like it all and raises my mag. Let’s hope this will cure a couple of problems at once.

I really hope every one had an excellent Xmas, and Santa was good.
Christmas was unusual this year, but I can't complain. Well.. I could if you want me to but I don't see it being worth the effort. :p

Santa is always good to me. Must be the Christmas magic that allows him to know me well enough to get exactly what I want and/or need. It's almost like my wife goes shopping with him...

I hope you enjoyed your Christmas and that your recovery continues going well!

So you’re saying that mag itself (not something in Kent Tech) when kept at 1400 or above, keeps algae away? I’ve just never heard this and in my experience, mag has no/unnoticeable impact on algae growth.

I can’t tell if you mean magnesium in general, or specifically Kent Tech? You write as if you’ve experimented with this, but also say this is your first time using Kent, which makes me think you’re talking about magnesium in general.....which I’ve never seen anyone else discuss. Maybe you’re onto something here?

I’ve definitely heard that higher magnesium keeps algae away. I try to keep mine around 1450.

Kent Tech M used to have an "older formula" that worked really well when the Mg levels were elevated to 1500-1600+; it was speculated that there was something ELSE in the "older" formula that killed stuff like bryopsis; not the Mg itself. Since it was thought the formula did change, the stuff doesn't work as well. I've used Tech M a few years ago to kill bryopsis, and it did in fact work. I have a spare bottle just in case. I don't know when the formula changed though

SeaDweller is correct. like coral, algae likes ideal reef parameters, plus extra nutrients. Can also thrive in leas than ideal parameters too. In the ocean It is limited in growth due to constant grazing. But this topic can become contentious. :)

Hey Sarah, I’ve caught up reading these posts and had to laugh at some of your comments about being the patient instead of the provider. Every single person in healthcare should be a patient. Should be part of job training. I think the hardest part is knowing what they’re doing wrong! On the other hand it must be terrifying to Not know what’s going on. Yes, sorry everyone, we get job perks too. Kind of like cops who will look harder for a cop killer.
It’s nice to have perks. I needed surgery and had a colleague do it because I knew he was an excellent surgeon. I called him from my hospital bed and said, “David! I need better pain meds!” He asked what I wanted. I said Dilauded. In came a nurse with it. Ahh, bliss.

And you asking them to talk to you like you were 6. Lol. I’ve had that happen before. Throwing out medical terms I’ve never heard before and me being like, “Um, there’s a reason you are my Specialist. I’m not quite up to date on brain surgery. I’m OB/GYN”. Lol

The other one that made me laugh was you taking out your own staples. I totally would have done that! I mean really if you know you can do it better why wouldn’t you?!
I completely told off a young nurse in the middle of the night once for not checking my wrist band before giving me IV pain meds. I’ll bet she never, ever did that again.

No matter if you end up practicing as a doctor or doing something else this experience will have made you a more understanding, compassionate person. Personally I do believe you will stay in healthcare. You have a passion for it and now an in-depth knowledge few of us have.

You are a remarkable woman! Do not forget that. And if you ever need to be reminded just ask. I’ll be happy to remind you.
Hi Terri, brain surgery huh? Me too. I however had to have surgery by strangers, in an unfamiliar setting. For my sons surgery coming up, I have my pediatricians cell number. I think that should help.

Hello,

First, please forgive me if I posted this in the wrong section, but I have never had this happen before and I am panicking.

So I have a 240 gallon tank with a 75 gallon sump tank. To be nice I let my brother and his children stay in my home for this week. (Long story) I just came home and found out that my nephews have been urinating in my sump tank. I don’t know how long they have been doing it, how often. I came home and caught my 5 year old nephew red handed.

I immediately shut down my return pumps, and shut the union valves underneath off and shut all flow from the tank to the sump off completely. I have no idea how much has already been sent into my main display tank, and how long. I’m doing a water test now to see where my parameters are now. I also have enough salt water stores to do 80 gallon water change.

The only thing I have added was I turned on my magnum 350 canister filter which there are two of them. One is a purification filter (it’s white) and the second is a straight carbon only. Any thing else I should be doing, I’m worried about my fish and corals.

Thanks
Wow, i have a 16g tank and this makes me never want kids. I wonder what makes them think that was okay. I wish you luck!

Hello,

So small set back, I had to go back to the hospital do to me getting influenza strain A and having bacterial pneumonia. I honestly can’t say I’m happy to be back, and wow the antiviral meds are way way worse lol than what they claim. Hopefully I will be out in a day or two it all about the x rays, maybe if they leave the Lead protector off they can just zap it with radiation lol. Oh how I love prednisone (NOT,),

Hello,

Ahh don’t let it scare ya lol kids Are super neat. Granted I don’t have any, the ones you speak of or the start of my thread were my nephews. But they were just being little kiddos who well think it’s funny to pee on or well in things. It didn’t hurt my tank, but I at the time didn’t know or how long they had been at the time. So I did what I do best and well I panicked for no reason lol. But hey at least now I have a bathroom down stairs and don’t have to display my huge banner wrapped around the tank saying this is not a toilet. :)

@Victoria M sadly no reef stuff this year. My parents gave me a new hand bag and i like it but it’s like 10 times the one I have now lol. Feels like I can fit one of the two halves of my Jeep in there. But I will treasure it always. How about you?

@Bronc and @Fudsey wow so glad I saw you pop into my never ending story lol. I have missed you both, how was xmas and any fun plans. In terms of the gha I just wanna nuke it. I can’t literally physically get it do to my accident, so need other ways. Was always told boosting mag and keeping it higher helps.

@Brew12 lol you always make me laugh lol even when it hurts. I’m glad xmas went well, and you know I love it when you complain, it’s just so poetic. How is your son doing, hopefully better.

I know I’m missing a few but I csnt do anything but sit in this bed now so I’ll be catching up lol. It’s odd every time they come in and I know it’s procedure, but always looks like they are in hazmat suits and I’m some deadly alien with potent poison. Oh well.

There is something going around this year that is particularly nasty. My son gave it to me before Christmas and it has been a lasting gift.
The chest x rays where negative though. Personally I love prednisone and just finished mine.

Get well soon.

Oh how I love prednisone (NOT,),

Prednisone is no joke. I have/had an auto-immune disease that required me to be on high doses for nearly a year. It completely takes away your sense of humor, makes your face break out like a teenager, and gives you a round face/fat upper back area. They literally call it moon face. Get off that stuff as soon as you can and get well soon!

I feel your pain

Hello,

Yes I have never been fond of it and definitely wheen people off ASAP. Short bursts are bad enough but long ones really affect people more internally than physically. It harms the liver and kidneys plus mentally messes with one. Between the antiviral which turns one into from dr jerkly to mr Hyde plus gee seizure, hallucinations, heart problems, self harm suicide kicked with prednisone is just bad lol I mean bad.
